I read the quote of the day of yesterday, and I need to be more precise in analyzing the situation. 1) It's not true Moses has chances to be selected ONLY if goes to beat the WR. All the athletes, Major or not Major, have the same chances. The only clear situation is that the Kenyan number 4 in London can't be selected, and the winner in London has an automatic shot. For all the other situations, there are in the big marathon Kenyan officials that can monitor the races, giving the right importance to the weather conditions. 2) The situation, looking at what happened last year, is not clear. The athletes are very close like ability in their performances, and some small problem in training, or during the race, can change completely the final result. For example, in London Emmanuel Mutai won (2:04:40) beating Makau for more than 1:00. But in NY Geoffrey Mutai beated Emmanuel for almost 1:30. Can this situation mean that Geoffrey is 2:30 faster than Makau ? And Moses was only 4.0 behind Geoffrey in Boston, so this means Moses is 2:30 faster than the WR holder ? And, if the WR is of an athlete 2:30 slower, in Berlin Geoffrey and Moses could run 2:01 ? So, it's clear that everything depends on the conditions of shape, and on the conditions of weather. Let the officials of AK work in the right way. If we have to look at the times only, we need accountants, not coaches, for selecting the athletes. And, in any case, nor Rotterdam, nor Boston and nor London can have the same perfect weather conditions of Berlin last year or of Dubai this year. |

I could be remembering this incorrectly. Didn't Makau take a fall @ London last year? Surely that affected him some. |

I think that the Brojo's are giving too much credit to NY and London winners. So for them the Mutais are in the team yet. 3rd spot is the big problem. You have Kipsang 4 seconds slower than the WR...Kirui and his major achievements, and Mosop. For that reason they think that Mosop could be selected only if he breaks WR in Rotterdam. |

Makau and Kirui are already selected! The news appeared in November. |

Or, a better example, Boston last year... |

It was my understanding that Kirui is the only guaranteed entry so far - or has that changed, too? I honestly don't see him in the top 5 of Kenyan Marathoners, but given the fact that he represented the country twice in WC and brought home gold, he deserves to go to London. A few month ago I would have said it doesn't matter whom they send, it will be 1-2-3 anyway. But there were some great Ethiopian results in the meantime... |

Does Renato coach any ethiopians. My favorite is Atsede Baysa. |

Do you have any predictions for the upcoming races? Ideas of the shape of certain peoples? And do you think that the situation with the 10,000m trials will affect the eventual teams much, with Kirui etc not being able to run? |
| kevins da azn |

Renato could Atsede Baysa be the next athlete to run under 2:20:00? She's got the lightweight body type. I think she can go all the way to 2:19:31 if she run even splits in the 2nd half. |

And Mary Keitany should target 2:18:56 Paula's 4th best time. That's in reach and also Liliya time 2:18:20. My predictions are 2:18:17 for Mary 2:19:18 for Atsede Baysa. Ndereba's kenyan record time should not be counted. I don't see it as a record when Ndereba ran a 22nd place finish in 2:35:08. |

Preview to upcoming men's Olympic marathon.....I predict Kenya and Ethiopia taking first 6 slots....who else is there? |

I think that Jaouad Gharib has many chances to be in the top 6 at Olympics if he's healthy. |

Im not so convinced of a sweep by the africans. Remember , as always in the Olympic games marathon , when athletes see and feel they are out of the top three medal positions , they start to think fall pay day marathons. Marathon race directors are on site to get deals done with the fall out. Japan marathoners run with pride over the payday , they will hammer it out to the finish. |

Yeah, the Kenyan's won't sweep the marathon. If they could put 10 athletes in, they could take 1-2-3, but with only 3 of them you can't expect them all to have a good day on the same day. And the Ethiopians are looking strong as well. |

Renato Canova Coach RE: Canova working with Bekele? 2/17/2012 4:31PM - in reply to Ast Reply | Return to Index | Report Post I think that, when somebody speaks about who the athletes I coach are, there is some confusion. I work directly with athletes in Kenya, that I follow directly. Only in this case I can say I'm really their coach. The athletes always with me are Moses Mosop, Abel Kirui, Eric Ndiema (2:06:07), John Kiprotich (2:07:08), Robert Cheruiyot (2:05:52), David Barmasai (winner Dubai last year), these last two together with William Kiplagat, Jonathan Maiyo (2:04:56), Philemon Limo (59:30), Silas Kipruto (59:39), Nicholas Kemboi, Gilbert Kirwa (2:06:14), Boniface Kirui (first marathon in Hamburg), Sammy Kitwara, Florence Kiplagat for the road races, and Leonard Kosencha (1:44.08, World Youth Champion), Silas Kiplagat (3:29.27), Yusuf Kamel (3:31.36), Collins Cheboi (3:32.35), Caleb Ndiku (3:32.03 but I want to move him to 5000m), Remmy Limo (3:32.78), Edwin Soi (7:29.94 last week), Thomas Longosiwa (12:58 last week), Wilson Kiprop (World HM Champion but looking at 10000m), Sylvia Kibet (silver medal WCh in 5000m) plus some other athlete at the moment not so strong. These athletes are for the most part under the management of Gianni Demadonna and/or Global (Jos Hermens and Valentjin Trouw). Then there is a group of athletes using my programs with their coach. Somebody is in Kenya (for example, one group of young athletes including Geoffrey Kirui (26:55) and his brother Gilbert Kirui (8:24 in steeple) and the World Junior Champion of Cross Faith Kipyegon Chepgnetich, that are in Kericho under the coach Charles Ngeno for the management of Global), some other in Ethiopia. Between the Ethiopian, I have a close collaboration with Gemedu Degefu, following the marathon runners of Gianni Demadonna (Dino Sefer 2:04:50, Shami Abdullah 2:05:42, Chimsa 2:05:42, Seboka 2:06:17, Aselefech Mergia 2:19:31, Aberu Kebede 2:20:33, and others as Tirfi, Netsanet, Koren Yal, Yacob Jarso). We are in touch every 2 days, I have the full report of their workouts and the comments of Gemedu, and I prepare the program for the next period (my periods are never longer than 2 weeks, because I have to update the situation according to the reality, not to what I think in theory). I have some athlete following my program directly, without the intervention of any other coach (Imane Merga). And I have another group of athletes, managed by Jos Hermens and Valentjin Trouw with Global Communication, using my programs directly (Mekonnen Gebremedhin, Yenew Alamirew, Genzebe Dibaba, Abeba Arigawi) but alternating my programs with the programs of the National Coaches, since they have to join the national group for 2-3 days per week. After this, there are program more general, used by other athletes of Global only partially (for example, they do some session that I write in the program, mixed with other type of workouts), and these athletes are not under my control, also if they use some specific workout I wrote not for them personally, but as type of training we can use for their event. This is the case of Bekele, and also of some very strong woman, but I can't say I work with them: simply, there is some circulation of my program and my training phylosophy that athletes can use according to their own feeling. At the end, there is another group of Kenyan runners (mostly marathon runners) with whom I frequently speak about training, that some time ask advises and want to discuss about particulars of their training and how to improve their performances. These are the athletes "self coached" that follow my training system, as the most part of athletes in Iten. Now I hope the situation is more clear. I like to share my ideas and to discuss with everybody, but I can be considered the coach of the first group only. In all the other cases, I help some other coach in coaching his group, since I like to grow young coaches that are the continuity for Track and Field activity. They can learn from myself as I learnt from Luciano Gigliotti, but they are the coaches, not me. Read more: http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=4454216#ixzz1s1W1l7U9 |

As it stands now in my book 4 of the 6 guys are ahead of the others: Geoffrey Mutai Patrick Makau Abel Kirui Emmanuel Mutai I think if the team were selected now the first 3 would be the team. Moses isn't too far back in 5th. G Mutai I think there is no doubt about. A great run by Moses changes this. He did win Chicago in a course record but because as crazy as 2011 was that wasn't that impressive. Now the interesting part if 4 of the 6, and 3 of my top 4, are running London. They all can't run well. As a result I see a max of 2 coming from London. |

The BEST team Kenya could send is this: Kipsang Mosop G. Mutai |

Agreed. AK needs look more at who has the best shot at winning than how everyone has run on completely different courses in different conditions. This summer the three best marathoners in my opinion will be Geoffry Mutai, Moses Mosop and William Kipsang. I do think that Abel Kirui could edge out Kipsang if everything goes well tomorrow but it might be risky to have him run a tactical marathon in London when his only marathon leading up to it is going to be a time trial type race. |
