Running 7-Days a Week 4/12/2012 5:28PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
As of right now, I'm running every day (only one run a day, no doubles). I'm averaging 35-40 miles per week, not currently training for anything, but I throw in a day of speed work, an easy run day, and sometimes a somewhat longer (around 10 mile) run on the weekend. I also vary the surface I run on. I only run on pavement once or twice a week, trails twice a week, treadmill twice a week, and usually do the speed work on a track.

Lots of people claim that it's bad to run everyday, and that "you're going to get injured," or , "you need a full day of rest to repair your muscles." I understand their point, but I've slowly worked up to running daily, and I really never feel too sore to run. I might have an ache or pain every once in a while, but nothing legitimate, and I almost always wake up feeling fresh.

I maintain a healthy diet, get plenty of sleep, foam roll and stretch most days of the week, etc.

So if I'm running daily with no problems so far, is it safe to continue to do so? I just really don't feel the need for rest days. Plus, my day just wouldn't be as good without a run!

Any feedback's appreciated, thanks!

Don't confuse rest days with days of no running. "Rest days" for me used to be a 6 mile jog easy. That was my day off.

I think it depends on your age and your injury history.

I agree with the poster who said that you can rest with an easy run. You could ease into one more day per week, and see how that goes, and increase gradually if it goes well.

Also, if you run every other day, and average 35-40 miles/week, then not only is your long run 10 miles, but you have to be averaging 10 miles a day, at least.

There's all kinds of different running programs and philosophies. Make sure you don't over train, but there's nothing wrong with running 7 days a week. Just make sure you're never opposed to taking a day off if you feel you need one.

I routinely do 6 days a week of running and it has worked for me the last 7 years. It's my routine. It's what works for me. However, it won't necessarily work for everyone else.

The OP did say they are running every day. The runs they listed specifically are workouts, not all runs for the week.

To the OP, I find that my training tends to be more consistent over a medium term (months) if I am running 7 days a week. Unless you're injury-prone, I'd assert that it's probably safe to run 7 days a week for as long as you feel. You said you're not training for anything so you don't really have structured seasons, but if you start feeling a nagging pain a few days in a row, take three or four days off (cross-train if that suits you) and see how it feels when you get back into running. Also, might be worth noting that a little strength work (especially abs/hips/general core stuff) can go a long way towards injury prevention.

My "rest" day is usually Saturday with 2 5 mile jogs.

If you're running 7 days a week 35-40mpw with one 10mi long run, that means you're running 25-30mi over the remaining 6 days, which is between 4 and 5 miles.

4-5 miles is not enough IMHO. Better off upping that to 6-7mi or taking one rest day, if you have to.

Even as far back as high school, I always felt better running every day. Slow and short was enough of a break. A full day off and I would tighten up and feel terrible for the next two days. I'm 46 now and this is even more true.

What are your running goals? Are you racing or just running for general fitness?

I prefer to run 7 days. It helps me maintain consistency and I just feel better. If I feel like I need a day off I take it. I may average a day off about every 3 weeks or so. When cranking up the training I may take a day every other week.
