I will be attending graduate school in Hayward in a couple of months, while also trying to continue to train and compete at a high level on the roads and on the track. I am looking for suggestions on good places to live in the East Bay that are close to running trails and relatively close to Hayward. |

Berkeley-Oakland hills are loaded with trails and try running with this club, they're legit and train as a group. www.strawberrycanyontc.org |

San Leandro as close as you can get to the entrance at the bottom of Lake Chabot. I lived there when I went to grad school in the Bay Area and ran the trails every day. Never managed to explore them all. |

Is it Hayward State (CSU East Bay)? That university is up on a hill and quite isolated, but there is a lot of hilly running possible in the rolling hills up there. You are "close" to other stuff but not close in a way that I would consider convenient. I'm not much into driving out to go for a run, but if you're into that, there are plenty of parks within driving distance, notably around Lake Chabot and around Castro Valley. There is a trail that exists mostly as a concept right now, called the Bay Area Ridge Trail. http://www.ridgetrail.org/ The plan is to join all the various regional parks around the bay area in such a way as to have a ~350 mile contiguous trail. That would technically require going through your area so there must be some trails around there that would serve as part of the ridge trail in Hayward. |

Oakland. Doesn't need to be in the hills. I could live almost anywhere in the city (I live in East Oakland), but would love to live in Rockridge or the Lake Merritt area. Either way, there's great running nearby. Lake Merritt (5k around) and Temescal (a mile or so) are great places to run. You can run up into the hills into Joaquin Miller or Redwood Parks. Berkeley is nearby (fire trail). The paved trails along the water in Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley, and Emeryville are close by. Lake Chabot is about 15 minutes away by car. Tilden Park is about 20 minutes away (since you have to go through the streets Berkeley to get there). All in all, the best place to live and run. Even runs in SF are just 15 minutes away (great long run down Embarcadero, under the Golden Gate, to Sea Cliff, to Ocean Beach, and back through the city through GG Park). I've lived here for ten years and never get bored with my daily runs. Plus, you'll be close to a great restaurant, bar, and cultural scene. |

PS: If you're looking for a team (and people to run with), Transports is the way to go. I can connect you, if you're interested. Lots of great runners call the East Bay home (and you'll see them up at Redwood Park in the Oakland Hills). |

Thanks everyone, sounding like San leandro, Castro valley, near lake chabot is my best bet? Anyone looking for a roommate, or know of decently priced studios or rooms? I know all about the different clubs, I actually started my own, but would definitely like to train with guys from the transports or strawberry canyon. |

We're about 60% grad students at Cal and there are usually roommate spots available among us, but we are mainly graduate students and undergrads at Berkeley with a good masters team too. Lake Chabot/Hayward has good running and is closer to your campus but it woould be socially isolated for most people our age. It's more of a family bedroom community, and we're more of a closeknit graduate student community if that makes any sense. I'm not sure why sj quik hates on our club so much, we're cool with Transports. |
