Women's 800m WR: Pamela Jelimo, Mariya Savinova, Caster Semenya or other who will break it? 4/3/2012 1:26PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Pamela Jelimo.......1:54.01 (2008)
Mariya Savinova.... 1:55.45 (2011)
Caster Semenya......1:55.87 (2009)

Pamela who ran 1:58.83 to win indoors Worlds easily and Caster Semenya who ran 1:56 last year for Silver at Outdoor Worlds both show they are back on their way to top form. Mariya Savinova have now been improving in the 800m for each of the last 3 years. Which of these ladies do you think will break the legendary 800m WR 1:53.28 by Jarmila K? Do you think either will break the WR, will someone beat them to it, or do you think the record will stand the test of any active elite woman for the next several years?

Arguably the world's best female 800m runner ever Maria Mutola and now coach of Caster Semenya said, "Caster is capable of 1:51, 1:52." I myself put my money on Pamel Jelimo if she can return to her 2008 form. What are you thoughts on which female have the best chance of beating the WR?

I can't wait for Semenya to smash this world record.

It'll be the icing on Lamine Diack's 'equal opportunities for all' cake.

Absolutely hilarious stuff.

Oh it will be a barnburner if Pamela and Caster returns to their 2008 and 2009 form respectatively for 2012 Worlds and add Mariya Savinova. Can our top two Americans (last two bronze medalists at the 2010 and 2012 Indoor Worlds) and the Kenyan Janet Jepkosgei challenge any of these medal favorites in 2012?

it is ridiculous that she is allowed to compete. as for the others, I do not think they can break it. I guess we can all agree that Kratochvilova was doped to the gills?

Obviously, but I actually sit more comfortably with a cheat holding the record rather than a non-female.

But, as I said, I hope Semenya breaks it. It'll be really funny.

So the doped up women's 800 world record might be broken by either a doped up Russian, a doped up Kenyan, or a man?

Fantastic!

trollism, ggg, and Koneko

THe lack of maturity is evident by your responses. Posters like you are the main reason for the decline of Letsrun and so many popular posters seeking new discussion avenues.

Caster Semenya was cleared to compete after over a year of extensive investigating in which many experts were consulted. There is no proof Pamela Jelimo or Mariya Savinova are doped; therefore, to throw around accusation based on nothing is a sign of stupidity and immaturity.

I guess Alyisa Johnson and Erica Moore are both doped as well since they are medal threats or is it just foreigners?

Doesn't it bother you that she runs 1:55 and clearly holding
back (a lot!)? Assuming she is a woman and not doing doping,
I just find it unlikely. Kratochvilova was doped running
1:53 and only Olizarenko has been within 0.7 secs.

I never said anything about doping, apart from maybe inferring that the current WR is perhaps tainted.

If you honestly think that Semenya was 'cleared to compete' based on physiology, then you're a bit deluded. She aggressively lawyered up and left the IAAF with no other option other than to let her run.

How come none of the 'extensive investigating' has been released and we've heard from none of these 'many experts'. You can claim it's to do with privacy, etc, but given that she's clearly 100% woman as far as they're concerned, what's the problem with someone explaining.

She tested positive for 'man' at the African Junior Champs. Are you suggesting that this was a false positive? Don't you think it's a bit of a coincidence that a 18 year old that looks like a male and runs like a male tests positive for being a male?

Oh, and by the way, those athletes you mentioned are foreigners to me anyway. Perhaps they are doped.

Yes for some reason Americans and Brits only dope on the sprints and 800m is where the medals dry up!

Apparently you don't know what right to privacy means? It doesn't mean that since a poster who call him/herself trollism whats details that facts must be released- it means the right to keep private! Many posters don't have the right to slang allegations around without proof and yet it happens everyday.

I don't know what the fixation is with Caster because I truly feel if Pamela Jelimo can return to her form she may be the woman who eventually runs 1:51 before her career is over (pending she returns to form and stays focused for a few years).

I'll give you 20-1 Jelimo never runs under 1:52.
