Looking for Reassurance- In-Season Mileage 4/2/2012 8:57PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I consistently ran about 50 miles per week during the winter. The post-season races that I need to be running my fastest times for are about 6-7 weeks away. I am mostly interested in running my fastest time for these meets, which means I am willing to run slower times in the multitude of meets during these upcoming weeks. However, my coach has my team run 2 workouts a week, and with a weekly dual meet on top of this, this schedule has the potential to rapidly reduce that 50 mpw long before I find it necessary. To put it into context, I am a 10:00 3200 4:40 1600 guy. A recent workout I did was 10 x 400 @ 70s pace. I am well capable of running that workout in 67s if I really hammer it. Based on my understanding of what it means to peak and taper, I beleive I should be mantaining about 45 mpw for at least 3 more weeks and once those three weeks have passed, then I will begin speed up the intervals. Is this a correct understanding of what I should be doing? I have guys on my team who mantained similiar base mileage to myself, and largely as a result of my coach, have already halved that. Will they still be running strong at the end of the season when it matters. In the meantime, I've sort of been "going rogue" adding on distance runs after practice to mantain my 45 mpw. Can someone reassure me that I am following a sound training plan? or is it the case that I am overly obsessed with mileage. I hear of guys who run 30 mpw in high school and run 9:20 3200 and 4:15 1600. Should I aim to be like them, or is the plan I'm following more reasonable for improvement? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Would be best if you asked your coach if you could do extra so he knows what's going on.

And 30mpw for 9:20 and 4:15 is rare. very rare. Usually it takes 50-90 mpw for that.

Most guys I know keep their mileage fairly consistent for the entire season then drop low for like 1-3 weeks.
Theyll go: 70mpw for the 2nd half of offseason, 60 for first 8 weeks of season, 40-30 for last 2 weeks.

Hey, I am in a very similar situation. I, however, do 400-1600. So this winter I did 30 mpw and I've managed to maintain that by doing doubles and long runs on the weekend. My coach trains us with only about 15 mpw, and it works for us! We often do 4 interval workouts in a week.. coach hardly believes in rest days. We'll do like 8x400 or 3x(8 4 1) Last year on seriously 15 mpw, I went 5:13 and 2:18, which in guy time is like 4:23 and 1:57 I think.
This year, however, I wanted to step it up a notch so I added an easy 3-5 on M and W (and sometimes F) mornings. I also run to and from practice, which is an extra mile. Finally, I added a long run on Sunday. This means that I don't take any days off. So I do an extra about 17-18 mpw than my team but it's not too much more. I still hit 30 in season. The problem comes in the tri meets.. my coach always runs me in 4 events, and it's harder for me to recover. hmph.

"Guy time" conversions. Awesome. Seriously, I have a lot of trouble wrapping my head around female times, and I don't think I'm alone. You have a point though. Doing 20-30 minute morning jogs a couple of days a week (adding them in gradually of course) can make a big difference in the long run. Personally, I think they even aid recovery once you get used to doing them.
