Lived near the loop in a mixed neighborhood. Was there crime? Yes. Any more than other major cities? No. I've spent plenty of time downtown and never felt even slightly unsafe.

The thing is, Wash U pulls from all over the country, and a ton of kids go straight into grad school. Of course kids from the east coast and California tend to move elsewhere.

I have no idea how you can make these claims that there isn't more crime than other cities. Just look at the stats! Specifically the loop/north area. There are more homicides in the city that just about any other city. It's a fact and Not opinion.

If you look at other great universities in other cities such as Boston, Nashville, new York, and others you will see that they pull just as many out of state kids as wash u but the graduates actually stay there for a bit.

I've lived in Stl for many years and have also live in many other cities. There are a few nice things about the place, but in general it really is a dead city on the decline, just like detroit

What you would need to look at are rates by metro area. The St Louis metro area is carved up into dozens of little towns with the poorer areas concentrated in the actual city of St Louis. Most of the St Louis area population doesn't live in the rougher parts of town actually in the city of St Louis.

The stats are wrongly compiled. St. Louis isn't in the top 10 if you include the metro area, as you should: http://www.forbes.com/pictures/efel45mde/1-detroit-mich/#gallerycontent

Im from St. Louis and it looks like the team is slowly improving. They brought in a good crop of distance men this past year. Give the coach an email. It cant hurt to at least contact him and see what its all about.

Which school are you talking about? Maryville? I will look into it. As far as crime goes, I'm not all that concerned, as I would spend the majority of time on campus and very little actually out in the city. I was in St. Louis on one other occasion a few years back and my family went to a Cardinals game. The downtown seemed fine.

I think he was talking about Saint Louis University which is supposed to be a pretty good school (I know that around town it has a pretty good reputation). I will say that the new track they just built is pretty darn nice.

I was thinking about going to WashU for graduate school a few years ago and went and visited. It seemed like St. Louis was either super-ritzy or total ghetto, with not much in between.
