looking at broken escalator

I am currently sitting next to a broken escalator and I just can't believe what I'm seeing. It's just stopped. Right next to it are stairs, and then another working escalator that is going down. These people have no idea how to deal with it. So far I've seen people:

Stop dead and scratch their heads, go 50 yards out of their way and find an elevator

Walk halfway up, stop, then turn around and come down, hesitate, take stairs or find elevator

Complain for a minute about it being broken, take stairs

Try to walk up escalator going down

Give up and turn around, go back to wherever they came from

There has been a near-crowd at the bottom of this thing of people trying to figure out how to deal with the escalator not working for a half hour. I swear...everyday what little bit of faith I have left in the human race dies a little more.

I was stranded on a broken escalator for over 6 hours once. It was a nightmare.

“An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You would never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.”

Whoever operates the escalators should switch the working escalator so that it is running up instead of down. Walking down stairs is easier and faster than walking up stairs, so if people can only take the escalator one way, they should be able to go up on the escalator and down on the stairs.

Do escalator operators every just reverse the direction in the middle of a busy day to see what happens?

Escalators in the port authority bus terminal switch direction during the day to accommodate commuter volume (more people going down in the AM than up and vice versa in the PM).

That building has always confused me. They call it a bus terminal, but it's pretty clearly actually a homeless shelter. Wonder why they chose that name.
