1600m and 800m put into the 200m 3/21/2012 10:53PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I primarily run the 16 and the 8 with times of 5:12 and 2:23. Im not a sprinter at all. My teammate asked our coach if he could run the 200m sprint (he's more like a sprinter). Our coach went insane and decided to put me in it too as a "speed workout" and put me in the jv race.

The obvious problem is I cant sprint, never raced a 200m and I don't want to risk extreme embarassment. Now that doesn't mean I don't want to run it, I think it would be a fun thing to do (I was a part of a 4x400 relay and got 3rd out of 7 teams and had a blast) but any tips that could help?

I was a middle distance guy in high school, but often ran the 220yds (dating myself there) for points when I was on JV. It was a good thing -- I learned how to start from the blocks, run the curve and acelerate on the straight. My time dropped from a dismal 26 seconds to a low 24 by my sophomore year -- speed that no one thought I had.

I've never used blocks though so I don't think I should use them because i'd have no clue how to work them and all that.

Keep your leg speed up, try to stay tall on your toes.Keep your head level. Keep your hips square and allow your speed to build. IN other words, stay in control.
It'll take you longer to build than a sprinter, but you should be able to hold that top speed longer.

The 200 is not easy for a sprinter. The speed will drop off at about 130 - that will help you get back in it if you haven't already quit on yourself.

Most sprints are about who slows down the least. You should be fine. Enjoy it. There is no pressure on you. Only on the sprinters who will be worried about you running them down.

That's usually my strategy when running the 800!
