I have an MRI arthrogram set for Thursday morning. Hopefully I'll know more by then.

Turns out I have stress fractures in both femurs and I tore my labrum in my left hip. Not sure how I didn't feel that.
Ow. I am really sorry. Bet you are glad you didnt run that marathon.
Was surgery suggested for the labral tear and did you have associated impingement (CAM or pincer lesions)? If you do need surgery, be sure to go to someone that is an expert in hip arthroscopy and does a lot of them. A very specialized operation that very few orthos can do well.
Labral tears are more often subacute - in that most people including myself, cannot identify a single event that caused it.
Doc isn't sure about whether I should get surgery. She noted a bit of FAI, but she thinks most of my symptoms are related to my stress fractures, not the labral tear (I have great range of motion, only weight-bearing hurts). So we may hold off on the surgery for a little while. She was also a bit wary about the surgery because it's only been around for 5-10 years, so it's unclear what the long-term effects are.
Sounds like a good plan. Good luck with everything.
Thanks, I appreciate the advice.
I have had 2 patients with labral tears. One, who was only a recreational tennis player, had hers repaired by Steadman Hawkins in Colorado by the person who was supposed to be "the guy" and the other, a recreational 30mpw runner chose not to have hers done. The woman who had the repair is still in the same amount of pain as before the surgery. The runner who didn't have the surgery took some time off to let the inflammation go away, and still runs with occasional pain. If you make your hip stabilizers stronger with PT, the tear should bother you less, and certainly I wouldn't recommend surgery until after the stress fractures heal to see how that changes your symptoms. Good luck.
Thanks, voiceofreason, that's the plan for now. I'm not going to do any strengthening for now just to make sure the inflammation goes away completely, but I will pick that back up once I feel better.
Voice, I had surgery for fai and labral tear plus additional microfracture for the associated arthritis (am 47) - done by the "man" at Steadman.
Hip, Voice is correct in not doing surg if ever until your bones heal.
Am 6 mo out. The labral tear pain is long gone but as a whole I am still not back yet - problems with glute med weakness leading to improper gait/limp. I swim a lot now, about 3000m per day of high quality swim workouts and have now redoubled efforts at PT.
Have you seen long rehabs for this extensive of surgery? I am now thinking it is gonna be a yr if I am ever fully able to run low level recreationally again. (I was a very good masters marathoners)
Blonde, how long did it take for your doctor to make a decision on your need for surgery?
I am in a situation in which if I get the surgery in the next several months, crutches and rehab will be only a minor inconvenience. However, due to a variety of life commitments/changes coming up in several months, if I wait too long to get the surgery, being on crutches will be a serious problem, financially and otherwise. In all likelihood, I would have to put off the surgery for at least a year, if not longer, if I don't get it in the next several months.
On the other hand, I don't want to rush things and get surgery for no reason.
I hate to post on an old thread but these symptoms are exactly what I'm experiencing as I'm training for my 3rd marathon. I had hoped to qualify for Boston, and with more and more "rest days" to accomodate this injury, I'm about to go crazy! 4 weeks and the pain has lessened and sometimes is worse than others. Stretching and foarm rolling don't seem to help. Doc appointment isn't for another two weeks and the anticipation of waiting for an answer is driving me crazy!
