Why dress up nice to travel on a plane only to have bad body odor upon exit?
Actually people USED to dress up to get on a plane because it was exotic and reserved for the well to do. Now the airport is more like a bus station.
When I'm in an airport the only people I see "dressed nice" are people that are obviously traveling for business purposes.
I agree with EZ10miler. I travel a lot and most people now look like absolute slobs. Clothes are not even clean, nor often appropriate for the public (think pajama pants).
People are a mess, I hate going to the airport. Everyone is wearing pajama pants and flip flops, looks like hell, probably hasn't bathed.
Add in that no one knows how to pack a small carryon, or how to use the overhead bins, or basically how to be a good traveler.
I think Bus stations might be a better option.
I don't understand though why anyone would want to dress up to get on a plane. I don't advocate looking like a slob. But I also think its ridiculous to get dressed up for a plane unless your object is to appear to be a frequent flyer snob.
In many countries, people still dress more formally in everyday wear. If they are going on a plane, that is something special and they dress up even more.
I've been on chicken buses in Central America that had better dressed occupants than most domestic flights. I'm not going to say it's good or bad, but American culture has become very casual. It's amazing how much Americans stick out due to the clothes and overall shabby appearance.

Yea, like those people who have jobs that require they look professional, and prefer to look neat when casual away from home. Boy, those people really suck.
People flying for business. Duh.

What's wrong with dressing normally for a stinky plane ride, and then changing for business meetings when you arrive? No need to dress up much for a stinky plane ride, unless you're so pressed for time and you're about to have a meeting with a CEO within hours of arrival.

Maybe if frat boy pigs like you would start dressing appropriately and bringing fast food on the plane, it wouldn't stink.

You fly into the city and head to a client or a meeting, sometimes you leave the same day. Happens all the time. I am not going to bring a grungy flying outfit and change in a bathroom.
When you have a dozen of the same suits, you just prefer to get dressed once a day. I'll get it dry-cleaned if there is any problem. Otherwise, I'd rather spend my time doing more productive things like surfing letsrun.

How many of your suits are BLACK?
What's up with those people that wear weird hats when traveling? You know for a fact that they don't wear those stupid looking things in real life.

stinky and dusty....really? I'm not saying planes aren't dirty but I rarely get off a plane thinking I now reek like I just left a bar.
Yeah. What's with the stinky dusty planes? You can't be flying in 'Merica? Are there chickens and goats on those planes as well?
The real reason is that dressing well usually equates to getting better service. This is equally applicable everywhere, but getting better service in an airport has a much bigger impact on your life than getting good service in a 7-11. Therefore when flying it makes sense to dress well.
Think about it. You've all complained about the slobby people populating airports. Imagine being a customer service rep for an airline, dealing with these people all day long. Then suddenly a man comes up to you wearing a nice pair of jeans and a well-tailored blazer with a button down shirt - nothing crazy, but he looks well put together. He's polite when he makes his request and asks for your help. You as a rep are about 1,000x more likely to go the extra mile for this guy who acts and looks classy than you are for the 10,000 slobs acting like jerks that surround him.
I agree, I have never been on a plane that I have thought is stinky or dusty.
The headrests smell like shit.
