According to google, 1 meter is equal to 1.0936133 yards. If that's the case, 880 yards is equal to 804.672 meters. So would a 1:53.4 yards be about a 1:53.0 meters? Or am I missing something?

Yes, that is equivalent to 1:53.0 for 800 meters.
I would convert it to just under 1:53. Mile to 1600m is usually 1.7 seconds, and that's only 9 meters difference. Obviously the 800/880 is a bit different since it's run at a faster speed etc, but the 4m is still probably worth .4-.6 seconds.
Closer to 1:52.74.
Of course, if it was hand timed (probable) then this would convert back up to about 1:53.0 auto timed (as properly noted by yourself and the above poster).
Kind of nitpicky, but if you're going to write precision to tenths of a second you should carry that precison in your calculation, so 1:53.4 for 880 yards is about 1:52.7 for 800 yards. It's also about 1:53 seconds, but 1:53.0 is sloppy.
Because 800m is shorter than 880 yards, it can be slightly faster.
Purdy says 1:52.61
Daniels says 1:52.70
I know the 1.6s for mile to 1600 is good and that there's a pretty good equivalent for an 800 but you can just go with: 113.4s divided by 804.672m, then multiply out by 800m. works pretty well, too. so, you get 1:52.8.
He prolly did it on a cinder track or if it was an all weather track they were not as fast as the newer tracks. Factor in a little there, too- he IS your dad afterall.
And it was probably uphill for the entire run.
Plus the track was probably grass or cinders or old rubber tires - so I'd also say it was probably any where from 1:52.6 - 1:53.
Definitely faster than 1:53:4. :-)

I was going to add this. People will talk about how fast cinders COULD be and that's true but most cinder tracks i ran on were uncomfortable, to say the least. How old is your father? I was in high school in the mid 70's many of the tracks in my area were pretty slow.
Is this a verifiable mark or is he going by memory? All of my times have gotten faster over the years. You find yourself graduating with a 1:55 open and a 1:54 split that your parents has at 1:53.9. It doesn’t take much to tell people that you ran 1:53.4 when your best official PR was 1:55.
The usual conversion at that speed is seven tenths of a second.
Simple math
1:53.4 880 yards is 7.05 meters per second
880 yards = 804.672 meters
Time it takes to travel 4.672 meters when running 7.05 meters per second is .662695 seconds.
153.4 - .662695 = 152.73705

I just woke up;)
Ooops shoulda been 7.0957 meters per second
1:53.4 - .658427 =1:52.741573
Your dad was slow. That would have placed 6th at my high school district meet.

Add to that- I can make my times faster by adding in the cinder track factor and my spikes were a plastic plate with 6 x 1"
spikes with thin nylon (that used to rip where the upper met the sole) and my diet was horrible- they thought eating steak and eggs was good for you about 2 hours before the meet.
Oh- and we ran meets in the snow.
Adding in those I'd say your father was a 1:49.7 guy, convert it to FAT and he's 1:49.94.
Wow!!! He coulda been State Champ!!!!!!

Globe wasn’t as warm back then so need to adjust for that too. Back to 1:53.4ish
my quick math for converting 880 hand to 800 AT is subtract 0.6 sec
I guess for you the question is how you can convert his time so that yours is better, right?
