Ok, so I am currently a Sophomore at a decent D1 school. I am a walk on and thought that I was going to be a great 800m runner since that's all I ran in high school but that did not turn out to be the case.
A little recap on my high school career pr's. Don't laugh...
1:58 800m
4:55 mile
18:20 5k.
All off of speedwork, 15-25 mpw, if that.
I was doing anywhere from 35-50 miles per week freshman year and ran . A 28:21 8k, 1:57 800m, 4:35 mile(indoors), 4:04.3 1500m, 15:45 5k.
This last summer I decided to increase my mileage to 70 miles per week and have been averaging 70mpw thus far. This year I have run:
26:10 8k
4:26 Mile
3:06.5 1200m (DMR Split)
At this point 70mpw feels easy to me, I am never too sore or tired out. I only have 2 years left to run and want to get as good as possible before I graduate. I was thinking of bumping up my mileage to 90-100mpw from here on out and keeping it there. I know it may sound a bit extreme but it seems that the more mileage I run the better I get.
I have yet to run a 5k this year but I am sure I can run way faster than 15:45. Its time to get serious and log some serious mileage.
I want to run 25:15 in the 8k or faster next XC season.
Sub 4:15 Mile.
Sub 3:00 1200m.
I would like feedback from guys in my situation who decided to bump their mileage up way high and how much improvement they experienced.
