Tim McCoy is still hands down the best running to come out of Grant. Barret Duhl, second best.

Hello Ghost,
Thanks for the info about Rose's coach, Gary Lower. Looked him up. Military man, sounds like a great leader.
On the one hand I am surprised that U.S. Grant had someone as competent as Coach Lower clearly was. Anyone under the age of 40 (50?), will likely remember Grant as always having a token team in high tops, bringing up the rear at even the mid-week cross meets, a la NW Classen.
Been meaning to find out more about beasts of the past, such as Greg Avery out of Ponca City. Wonder what he went on to do.
In speaking with some people who went to school with Rose, all I get out them is that he "was a bad ass." Yes, that much I know. They just don't recall much about the team, coach, etc.
And to the homey who used to live at SW 15th and Penn, I was just in Friendly Foods (Exchange and Penn, but still) earlier, where they had 100% gasoline on offer for 3.29. If you're back in the 'hood anytime soon, there's a deal for you right there.

Sure. Larry Rose was pretty aggresside. On one workout he pussed me into the bar ditch when I tried to move past him. Good guy though and we remain friends. Also a talented cross country runner. I was on a second place Big Eight team with him (1970) and 14th place team at NCAA.
Ghost of Igloi
Once again stupid people trying to find something wrong about a kid that has done something special. No one cares about Larry Ross and his 3:59 in the 70\'s! Frezer ran 3:58 indoors. He worked his butt off to get here. From 4:42 to 3:58 is freaking impressive. He is defiantly an inspiration to us all!! Does anybody know what his training is like??
Not sure why people are spreading false rumors about numerous topics. I know Frezer. I have never been to Grant HS, so I won't say anything about THAT. BUT I DO KNOW Frezer is a hardworking individual who deserves every bit of credit. Martin Smith and the team at OU is a DAMN fine team and you would be ignorant to say otherwise. I had multiple classes with him and we took tests at the same time, etc. Nothing wrong was ever done. He speaks perfect English. If you talked to him for 10 minutes you would know that he was definitely brought up in the US. You wouldn't think twice, EVEN after hearing his last name. I LOVE YOU FREZ DAWG! He is just a normal student running amazing times. Stop making it more than it is.
I think Enrique B is actually Diego C!
This is correct.
What many people do not understand is that athletes at OU are there to play their sport and nothing else. The athletes there are even "brainwashed" by the faculty and athletics department into having that perception. The athletic department NEEDS the athlete because the SCHOOL needs money. The main source of revenue at OU is from fans that pay to watch sports there. If the athletes dont win games or perform well, guess what that means? Less money for the University. Sure, Martin Smith or Bob Stoops can run their mouth to the public all day about how they "care about the students morals and grades and success in life", but I have my ducks-in-a-row by solemnly informing the letsrun community that OU athletes are specifically told that they are there to compete/win and nothing else.
This is my advice to Grant H.S.- You need to start doing what OU is doing. Have a chinese/white person do all of your classwork, and start putting all of your effort into being the best at your sport. Completely ignore academia and focus entirely on your sport. Then you will start winning games/races and people in Oklahoma City will start paying to come watch you win. This will ultimately result in Grant High having more money and being a more.....uh.....higher self esteem institution with a better reputation. Keep in mind that all crime is the result of money depravation.
Yes
This thread is a dyestat thread. Take these childish arguments to that dumpster.
Frezer Legesse went from running a 4:42 and a 10:10 in high school to a sub 4 and sub 1:50 half miler. First off that is a f*** mazing. Had he come on this site and asked if he ever be sub 4 in high school he would of been chased away with the burning crosses and pitch forks.
So a kid come out make dramatic improvements and the whole topic is talking about how shitty the school is and how the africans have people do their homework for them. You guys are funny...its reasons like this why this sport will never become part of the big mainstream sports here in America. Baseball is filled with players born out this country, hockey has a ton, some of basketballs top players are not from the US and those sports are thriving.
I guess i will shut up, but thats my rant for a day. I think people should focus more on that drop rather then if he is not a natural citizen or who does his homework or how trashy his high school is..which is stupid.
I met Frezer once, it was the greatest experience of my life
Lots of anonymous and untrue crap in this thread about US Grant, Mustang HS, Frezer, Schwab, and OU. Someone obviously has an ax to grind, so don't believe everything you read on the internet.
Its funny that Mark Thompson's name was brought up. He is the coach at Oklahoma Christian who gave Freeser a scholarship when ou probably wouldnt have let him walk on. He is the coach that turned freeser into a very good runner, took him all over the country to race, and developed him into a great runner. Then freeser just disses him late in the summer to high tail it to ou? OU and freeser had been talking a while and nothing was ever said. I dont think Thompson really ever knew. I could care less if he ran 3:48 in the mile if that is the type of man he is. Mark Thompson and Oklahoma Christian made Freeser, Not OU, they are just reaping the benefits now.
I did some research on this so-called Ulysses S. Grant High in Oklahoma City. The place is a total dump. It has always been a dump. And always will be a dump. I simply googled "worst high schools in America" and Grant has been at the very top of the list for several years, followed by East St Louis High and Compton Highschool in California.
This is one of the list I found, all of the lists pretty much have the same schools listed and in the same order. Sometimes Compton is ranked higher than East ST Louis and vice versa. Lists were compiled on a combination of factors, including violence, drug usage, household income, act scores, and graduation rates.
#1- U.S. Grant H.S., Oklahoma City Oklahoma
#2- East St Louis H.S., St Louis Missouri
#3- Navajo Indian Reservation H.S., Farmington New Mexico
#4- Compton Polytechnical H.S., Compton California
#5- Crenshaw H.S., Los Angelos California
#6- Apache Indian Boarding H.S., Cibeque Arizona
#7- Detroit Mumford H.S., Detroit Michigan
#8- Bronx Remedial H.S, Bronx New York
#9- Inglewood H.S., Inglewood/LA California
#10- Chemwa Indian H.S., Salem Oregon
Thank God not a single school in my state (kansas) is on the list. It is very unfortunate that there are 3 Native American schools listed in the top 10 worst schools in the country. But you must also look at the rest of the schools on the list as well. Every single school in the top 10 worst chart is composed of a student body that is strongly non-caucasion. Be that as it may, the facts are true about this notorious Oklahoma City place of learning. It has continuously proven to be the worst in the nation.
Oh boy here we go with the white ir right bit again
I am betting half of you belong to stormfront
Every thing else you should also look at is income level of the schools in the area they are in. That plays more of a roll then race
He has been at OU for two years...haha. Seems OU has helped in this process just a TAD.

Source for your list?
Pretty dubious considering East St. Louis HS is in East St. Louis, Illinois.
