Actually, it isn't a "fake holiday created by Hallmark". Pope Gelasuis declared February 14th St. Valentine's Day toward the end of the fifth century. Valentine greetings go back as far as the Middle Ages. However, you are correct that Hallmark and others do profit from the holiday by selling about 150 million cards just in the U.S. (That figure doesn't include cards sold in other countries that celebrate Valentine's Day like Australia, Canada, Denmark, Mexico, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom).

I purchased my husband new running shoes, gift card to his favorite restaurant, tickets to the first round of the NCAA basketball championships in Greensboro as well as the ACC championships in Atlanta - he is obviously a big basketball fan.

For my children - they are in college - so they are getting want they enjoy the most - cards that contain cash.

Grandparents - gift cards and flowers.

We still have several very young nieces and nephews that we received build a bear gift certificates and the older kids - cash.

I assume by "created" he means "Hallmark took an existing holiday and marketed it so women have high expectations for there men for no other reason than it's marketed as such".

Just curious. I had usually seen Valentines day being more about romantic love; I suppose you like to celebrate it as being about love in general? Sounds nice - I hope you have a good time tomorrow.

I do not recognize Valentine's Day as a holiday. So, if I get my wife flowers it will be just like any of the other 50 or so random days during the year when I get her flowers. And if I don't, it will be just like any of the other 300 or so random days during the year when I do not.

I'm in the awkward early stages of dating a girl where I can't really think of anything to do for Valentine's. So I'm not doing anything. Hopefully it doesn't bite me in the ass.

Depends how you handle it. Awkward and unconfident--bad.

Confidently while reassuring her value--while teasing her a bit--good.

Most likely if you are having doubts it will be the first one.

Just do a simple gesture: make her dinner or a dessert. Don't go nuts; simple and intimate always works.

I was actually just going to see if she wants to go skiing Wednesday. I'm not big on romantic gestures any more.

I hope no girl actually thinks flowers, chocolate, a card and maybe dinner is a thoughtful gesture. It's the laziest, biggest cop-out of a Valentine's day I can possibly think of.

I'm in the same boat as the guy who said he's in the early awkward stages of a relationship. I'm just making dinner or something.
