If a half is just beyond your reach perhaps you should build up for a 10 mile race then have the half after your next build up.

I only have ran seriously now for 3-4 months.

I would try to get under 50 min for the 10k before considering a half marathon. Otherwise you would be running over two hours probably (which would feel like a marathon;-) )

I would also recommend you to throw the Brooks Adrenaline in the garbage. I hate mine. They are too heavy and caused knee problems for me.

200 pounds on a 6'6" frame is WAY too much weight for a distance runner. Compared to a normal skinny runner of 5'9" or 5'10", 200 pounds would be 20 pounds too heavy. That's a very conservative comparison. Actually, roughly 172 would be ideal at 6'6" for performance purposes. Note that this is for most runners.

Late summer / early fall is plenty of time to get in shape for a 1/2 marathon. 200+ lbs isn't a big deal if you're 6'6.

You should definitely be able to complete a 1/2 (you probably can "complete" one right now). When you say "compete" do you mean actually run a good time? If so, probably not.

But if all you want to do is finish, you should have no problems. I wouldn't think twice about it.
lots of advice

The first thing you need to do is buy the 13.1 bumper sticker. Tape that to your bathroom mirror as inspiration. When you finish your half, Tebow at the finish line and then parade around with your finishers medal the rest of the day. Drive around town proudly with your new 13.1 bumper sticker

For a competitive runner, yes. I wouldn't tell him to hold off running 1/2 until he is 172, which he probably wouldn't be able to hit without running 100 mile weeks and eating nothing but Harvest Bars.

172?! I will never be the light.. I would never want to be that light.. that's ridiculous. I would be happy at 6'6 210. I took my first spin with the Adrenaline and love them. They immediately removed any shin pain I had when I was running in them and after four miles. I really felt refreshed and my legs felt like I hadn't run at all. They feel so much lighter than my kayanos and are a much better fit for my wide feet.

Oh and in my warmup tonight, I went 7:33 for a mile.. and sadly, I've never broken 8 before.. So either I have not been trying hard enough or I just never had the proper footwear. Also after lifting and 20 minutes on the cybex I went back on the track and ran a 28 minute-3 mile. So I definitely am seeing progress. 3 months ago, I couldn't even break 30 in a 5k. I proved to myself tonight that I'll get better and now I am interested in seeing if I can pop off a 25:xx 5k or sub 1hr 10k. Thanks guys.

Don't listen to the naysayers here. Will you be ready to run a FAST half marathon by fall? No. Can a guy who is still overweight but runs 3-5 miles a day train to comfortably run a half marathon by fall? YES. Of course. You've got 7-8 months to train for it.

* Training for a half marathon will keep you motivated (goals are nice)
* Training for a half marathon will help you lose weight (unless you gorge yourself)
* You're already running 5 milers. Slowly up that to a few runs of 10-11 miles (once a week) with another moderately long run of 7-8 miles in there mid week.

It's not that hard. Half marathons are great...long enough that you do have to train for them if you don't want to die the whole time, but not so far that you need to be doing multiple runs over 20 miles (might do that if you're looking to greatly improve on the time down the road).

I have always been a big fan of running. I used to be an avid track and field spectator and have finally decided to take part of the sport instead of sit on the sidelines. I started jogging last summer and never got too serious. At the most I would run two miles and quit. I was probably 6'6 285 then, so yes I'm definitely a big guy. I have been working hard to lose weight and currently I'm down to 245. I have been running about 3-5 miles a night, with the most so far being six. My question is, if I keep up my weight loss with running and exercise at the gym, should I be able to tackle a half marathon in the late summer-mid fall?

I thought about 5ks but I want something that I am going to have to dig deep to finish. I know I can run a 5k, I do it almost every night. However I do want to get entered into some local 5k races just to see what kind of time I can run. I almost broke 30 last year but I'm pretty sure that I could get 27-28 now? Also, I just ordered the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11 after being a Kayano wearer for the last 7-8 months, I loved the Kayano but I think the cushioning has worn out as I'm starting to develop shin splints and I have put quite a bit of miles on them. Thanks everyone for your help. Most of you will probably say, "No, you shouldn't compete in a half marathon yet."

Hey guys, I thought I would update this thread though technically I was surfing letsrun looking for another thread and bumped into this. Once I received my Adrenaline's I have had no injuries whatsoever and am down to 217lbs. I also ran 10 miles for the first time today but have been successfully logging 25+ miles per week.

I'm actually getting ready to update my shoes and am looking at the Brooks Pureflow, since people relate them pretty closely to the Adrenaline's.

I am definitely confident I can run and finish a half. I have changed my goals from finishing it, to running my first one in under two hours.

I couldn't even break 30 for a 5k before the start of 2012. I ran my first race on April 7th and finished in 24:12.

I've also ran a 6:51 mile (4-12-2012) and a 49:37 6 miler this morning(4-28-2012). I have noticed huge improvements and much better running form and for whomever mentioned working on shorter races to improve time, I never thought I would want to, but I like seeing myself PR. I ran a 56:10 10k about a month ago, so to drop almost 4 and a half minutes off, I'm very, very happy.
