How much $ in electricity to run a treadmill? 1/19/2012 7:20PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Has anyone calculated how much electricity their treadmill uses?

What would you approximate for 1 hr of running at 9mph? What if you did this 12-15 times a month? Trying to decide whether to buy one based on the $ and energy consumption.

If electricity consumed is going to be the basis for your purchase, don't even bother. Go for a walk outside.

Yes, you need a watt meter ($19 from China on Ebay) to measure the wattage over time. The cost depends on the watts of your treadmill, at the speed you normally run, and the average time that you run.

My treadmill uses 196 watts, which is relatively low for treadmills. If your treadmill used 196 watts at 9mph for 1 hour a day for 15 days a month, at a cost of 11.5 cents per kilowatt hour, this would cost 99 cents per month.

You don't actually need a watt meter though. Just turn everything else off on the house, check the meter, run for an hour, then check the meter again. Be sure to subtract passive drains. This will show the electricity use of your treadmill.

A treadmill uses a lot of electricity, but you're only using it for an hour.

An average refrigerator runs all the time, and uses 24 times as much electricity as a treadmill.

So I wouldn't worry about treadmill use of electricity, unless you're trying to live off the grid.

thanks folks, this is helpful.

I'm thinking of getting a cheap treadmill used, so it will not likely have a large motor, and probably cut down on costs. I'm shocked that it uses 1/24 as much power as a fridge.
