Down with the Bass -- by firehose
anything associated with Mike Watt
Joy Division and New Order. Especially the early New Order records, which sound amazing in retrospect because the bassist was playing all the leads, the guitarist was doing rhythm, and the synths were covering the bass lines. Completely unique sound. I'd recommend you look up their "Movement" record.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dlN55SoF4QGreat recommendations so far. And by all means, feel free to include "bassy" songs that don't necessarily feature the bass guitar. Ginuwine's "Pony" comes to mind under this category.
Anything by these guys:
Queen and Bowie- Under Pressure.
Sadly by default, Vanilla Ice- Ice Ice Baby
In the pop idiom, anything with Flea is a good start. Listen closely to Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know". Flea does the bass track and is just all over the instrument. Any Red Hot Chili Peppers track is a lesson on the bass. Also, early Cake songs have a very prominent participation from the bass player. The cover of "I will survive" is a good example of letting the bass player provide more rhythmic interest and melodic support rather than just laying a simple rythmic and harmonic foundation.
Of course, the real kick-ass bass playing comes from the world of funk and jazz fusion. From Bootsy to Anthony Jackson to Victor Wooten to Stanley Clarke and back again, there are just too many monsters of the bass to mention.
The Police, Every Breath You Take
I was listening to "Silly Love Songs" on the radio the other day and noticed the bass guitar really jumped out of that track for me. I guess that's McCartney playing it, but I'm not a Wings historian so I'm not 100% sure about that.

Don't you wish sometimes Daltrey would just shut up so you could hear better the pyrotechnics going on behind him? Townshend is an eternal genius.
Most cuts off PiL's second album;
Material's 'Memory Serves' album (Fred Laswell on bass)
Any live cut of Whipping Post w/ the original ABB lineup (Berry Oakley on bass)
jet - are you going to be my girl
A lot of Yo La Tengo tunes have great bass lines, this may be the most popular (it kicks in after the first verse):
Rush - Marathon

Beat me to it.
I've also always liked the bass line in Jimi Hendrix's Fire.

this is a clip for a very good documentary named "An Ox's Tale" In it Townshend tells of being the peacemaker between Entwistle turning it up and Daltry lashing out for him to turn it down. Shows on Ovation from time to time.
A lot of Cream songs prominently feature Jack Bruce's bass lines.
"Sunshine of Your Love" is the most obvious choice.
