Ritz's 4th place a blessing in disguise? 1/14/2012 12:39PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Could Ritz's 4th place finish be a blessing in disguise? He is now forced to turn his attention to the 10k, but this could be a good thing. He has 12:56 5k speed, and combined with his recent marathon PR, he could pop a big one at the 10 if he can get a good block of training in.
what a feeling

My sentiments exactly

Calling it here first: Rupp gets Ritz at US champs, Ritz gets Rupp at Olys. with a bronze.

My sentiments - while I do think Ritz has a very good chance of making the Olympic team at either the 10k or 5k, the bronze medalist prediction is wildly off the mark.

The challenge with the Olympic track events (10k and 5k) is that at least 5 or 6 African runners and Farah can run a 54 sec (or better) last 400. And the do so off of running 2:35 per kilo pace (or faster). No American runner can do this, although admirably Rupp has come closer than others.

This is why Ritz wanted to make the marathon squad. It is where the money is - even if American marathoners are 3-4 minutes slower than their counterparts, the top few can still command appearance fees and money. Not so with track.

The sport no longer makes economic sense, even for the great ones.

Good point, but Ritz can try for the 10,000 now with his new marathon training and still run Boston or NY every year to make $.

Ritz getting a bronze in the 10k at the Olympics? Are you out of your mind?

it is. now Ritz realizes he can run ~2:07/27' on ~80 miles/week. whatever event he focuses on now, he's finally learned not to swat flies with a sledgehammer. whether Alberto has learned anything is another question.

Absolutely - Honestly hopefully Ritz will realize his best event is the 10k. Racing the marathon was great for his overall fitness though. Looking forward to big things out of him this spring and summer!

Nope, this is what will happen:

Bekele - gold
Farah - silver
Jelian - bronze

Rupp, Solinsky, Ritz...don't get it done when it matters.

If Ritz was to forget about that marathon jogging shit and get serious about his best events, which are 3K/5K, he might have a shot.

You are wrong. We have already arranged the finish order.
Farah, Rupp, Ritz in that order.

Short at your own risk. Remember, we have billions. We say, they do.

Really? at least 5 or 6 African's run 12:47's or faster in a 5k where they end in a 54? or 12:46 or better closing in less than 54?? What planet are you living on? And in the 10k? yea....how about no.

Ritz now realizes he can run 2 minutes faster than he did today, which was already the fastest he's ever run? What?

I don't see Ritz ever running a 2:07.
