The leader men are slowing down. Is there any chance of somebody in the second pack making a surge and catching them?
Surges by anyone are unlikely after 20 miles, but catching one or more of those guys may not require one. Everyone seems to think that there's little possibility of any of these guys really blowing up, as in 5:30s or worse. Going out far too fast is like radiation poisoning -- you don't feel it for quite a while, but when it hits it's lethal and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.
On women's side Desi leading with Shalane. Hastings and Kara right there behind.
Meb just dropped Hall, maybe 10m gap.
That's only on Thanksgiving.

Altitude matters.
Facts matters a lot more than fiction and superstition.
Khannouchi, Hall, Adbi, Meb. NONE of them were born at altitude.
Ill be damned if that wasn't the greatest Malmo post ever.
1:43:54 30k.... 2:26:40 proj. women.
2:08:40 proj. for men.
The men's leaders are now passing struggling women.
Abdi is back but not completely dead. I can't tell where Ritz is but if Abdi keeps this up (say running 5:15) he will make the team.
Mile 24 for men 5:01...
Now Meb is pushing the pace and in the lead. Hall 20 meters back.
...and Meb surges. His race now

Not really. Meb was born at 7500'. I got way to excited and wanted to include him.
umm, what part of Big Bear are you not comprehending? the 7000ft part or the 7000ft part? because either one of them means big bear is at ALTITUDE. please hit the doofus check key next time before you post. thanks ;)

No, he'd still be behind Hall.
WTF Malmo? Hall was born at 7000ft. Is that not altitude to you?

The women are still in close group of 4 - Flanagan, Davila, Goucher, Hastings.

I think it's safe to say that in that field, Hall wouldn't be feeling the effects of pace-setting for most of the race.

The problem is that right now, while they are tying up and struggling to get to the finish line with ever-slowing splits, G. Mutai, Makau, and Kirui would be picking up the pace and leaving the American contingent minutes behind.
Agree to disagree. I think that people put way too much weight into how much leading takes out of you. It certainly wouldn't make a 4 minute difference.

A great race if he hangs on though. Unfortunately or fortunately, Weldon will be asking him about his training partner's supposed EPO positive if no one else does.

I think Meb's the only American born at altitude that's under 2:10
Khannouchi - born Meknes, MOR, 1797 feet
Hall - born Kirkland, WA, 75 feet
Abdi - born Mogadishu, Somalia, 95 feet
Meb - born Asmara, Eritrea, 7755 feet

Mt. Everest is at ~29,000 feet, but Hall wasn't born there either.
