was it that building at 18th and Ocean Park, in Santa Monica, where Joe lived for many years, or did you guys not train at Santa Monica College and Palisades Park, (off the pier), in those days?

Tabori's best runner during the late 70's, early 80's was Dave Babaraki...a tough road runner around the LA area.
I do not know where Joe and Merle lived after they left the 4029 Gelber Place in the Dorsey High Area of Baldwin Hills.
By the way, at some point some time before I arrived Bob Schul lived in the McGee/Douglas apartment for a while.
I have heard stories of there being several runners staying on the living room floor for a time also.

Forgive me if I overlooked this in this most excellent thread:
Hills. Igloi. Discuss.
we never did 'hills', per say, under Douglas or McGee, per say...(ie, interval hill repeats). The areas we ran around Santa Monica and into Westwood had hills, but nothing to speak of. (When I trained under a Lydiard-type system, we would do interval hills during X-C and early track season...ie, 10 x 800m hill......or 10 x 300m hill....hills were gradual...not too steep.
Thanks.
Again, forgive me if I overlooked it....
Typical warmup / cooldown for an Igloi session? (I want to look at supplementary running in his program.)
I find the legacy and history of the LATC to SMTC and Laslo's SFVTC, interesting....I take it that when the world class guys like Beatty, Schul, Tabori, Grelle, etc, were training in LA in the early to mid 60's that you weren't yet training in Santa Monica? Where did you do your track work and road runs? (did Igloi favor Tabori, also being from Hungary, talk Hungarian to him when the other guys were there...or did Tabori translate for Igholi at times?..interesting dynamic). btw, I heard that Joe's guys do all their track work at UCLA now, for a few years and don't meet at Palisades Park in the fall, like we used to in the 70's and 80s? As a kid, I was a big fan of Jim Grelle. He was overshadowed in his day by Ryun, Beatty, Snell and the like; but an outstanding miler. Seemed like a nice guy.
cooldown was always repeat 100m, back and forth for 20 or so....but, not sprinting.....a mix of jogging on some to race pace on others.....a unique but great idea....instead of just stopping after hammering out 10 miles at 6 minute pace.
Orville, did you know Richard Greene, when you were training with Igloi? Ran a 4:06 mile at Eastern Michigan in 1963 before coming west to train with him.
I knew Jim Grelle and Dick Greene. The others mentioned had all left before the 1964 Olympics. I never trained with Coach Igloi in Santa Monica. Our training was on the grass at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles.
I see Richard (Dick) Greene many mornings during our daily exercise. He has told me many stories about training under Igloi.
Please give Dick my best. I, too, remember those days. They were fun!
Dern is reportedly a solid running fanatic. A track enthusiast, I have vague recollection he had some interest (ablility?) in the 800m. Good to see he contributes like that, supporting clubs. I believe he has some respectable marathons under his belt, maybe some ultras, too.
Orville,
Did you ever meet a runner coached by Igloi named Richard McCallister?
Paws
I met Bruce Dern in the late fall of 1964. He had been an 800 runner in university but had developed into an ultra runner/fanatic. We had many runs together during which Tom Sturak and I listened to the many of the great stories he had.
Anyone know and understand what Igloi meant by "swing." Example, "Easy Swing."
Tinman
i believe swing referred to an emphasis on good foreleg extension
Bump. This is a fascinating thread.
Orville, I just sent your regards to Dick. He was wondering how your shoulder was. I gave him the letsrun website and he might be dropping by here. He said John Bork and his family were going to visit him soon.
