I agree that for beginning runners, interval/fartlek work, carefully and watchfully applied, is very productive in the first year or so. This is because the greatest gains in the first year are in VO2 max; after that it is improvements in economy. I had a 29-year old woman improve from 7:00 to 5:10 in the mile her first season, mainly by doing interval work at controlled pace mixed with easy distance runs of moderate distance. The next year we adopted a more Lydiard-esque approach, which eventually took her to sub-4:30 for 1500. |

This post is in reply to RedHatRunner, Over the years there have been many coaches using a modified Igloi System successfully. You named coaches who have been key Igloi followers. I can not name many of the successful athletes who were coached by these coaches but I will name a few that come to mind. Norm Higgins coached Jan Merrill. Jacqueline Hanson, Miki Gorman and Leal-Ann Reinhart were coached by Laszlo Tabori. Joe Douglas coaches Frances Santin. I believe that Joe Douglas also coached Jenny Spangler, David Mack, Tod Harbour, Bill McChesney, Bill McCullogh, Wally Seager, Claudette Groenenedaal and Khadevis Robinson before he earned a contract with a shoe company. Johnny Gray is Khadevis Robinson's coach at the present time. |

Hi - Searching back POSTS I noticed this your thread and wondered if we know each other. I ran at Pierce College 1963 thru 1966 under Pete Petersons and Bob Chambers. Would love to chat and keep in touch. I have a weekly thread to about 250 past and present runners and would love to include you in my posts. Sincerely, Bill Scobey, 414 San Antonio St., Ojai, CA 93023 (805) 646-7617 |

Are you the real Bill "Mad Dog" Scobey? |
| no one |

Bill - yes we do ... know each other. My older brother ran at Pierce a year or so (maybe overlap) after you - Terry (1:50.3). He ran on NR 4x8 (7:29.xx or so) with Bob Hansen, Paul Myers and Biff Newman. Terry and Biff and John Becker all live in South Lake Tahoe. Big Red ... John posts at T&FN from time to time - not sure about here. How's this for out of the blue - I had a brief contact via email with Vince Engel from Humboldt. He owns an advertising agency in SF - pretty uptown I hear. Lil bro Brent ran 1:49.3-4 in HS (by himself, in 100 deg and 90% +/- humidity)- unlimited talent. I spent some time training with Pete and Bob, the lifeguard, Chambers. I didn't realize he was such a stud in 800 - Olympian in '52 I think. I bounced around trying a number of coaches in So Cal - as there were quite a few to choose from with a variety of approaches - trained some with Tabori. We were fortunate that many around. As a matter a fact I occasionally recall sitting in the back of (somebodies) VW van as you ran your 8:15.xx in Culver - blasting 'Gimme Shelter' for you. Good memories. Can't remember the Vdubs owner/driver tho. Seems like we ran in a LB 'on the beach'10k about then - Jan/Feb '72 - or sometime I got there 5 minutes before start - but one of my better 'races' I ended up running with Mark Covert and quite a handful of other very talented runners at CSUF - you two had been to the Oly training camp with all those crazy guys. He had great stories about that. He scours this place (LRUN)pretty regularly but don't think he posts - we correspond several times a year. He'll likely call if he reads this - Be great to hear from you as well. I'll get in touch with you. I did email you and Gary Tuttle at your running camp address - quite a few years ago. |

Hey, Bill. I was the first to list you on that thread back in August called "who are some names of the least known great runners." I used to read about you a lot in running magazines in the early 1970's, when I was in high school. You owned the Culver City Marathon in those days, as I recall. Wasn't your marathon PR 2:15? There was another guy who was a top distance runner in California in your era whose name escapes me. You probably raced against him and can provide his name. He had black hair (and looked Italian), wore a white singlet with wings on it, and wore white shorts. His first name might have been Norman. Does that jog your memory? |

Bill, I ran numerous races with you in the early to mid-1970s. I am Reid Harter, aka Ghost of Igloi. I consider you one of the great all time California distance runners. Hope you are doing well. |

I ran with a guy in the early 70's in Kansas that used to mention your name, running together in Oklahoma; Bill Ward. Does that ring a bell or am I thinking of someone else. |

The runner you are referring to may be Byron Lowrey. |

Yes, I do recall a Bill Ward...a little foggy on details though. I ran for Oklahoma State in the early 70s, and coached in Kansas in the early 80s... |

Yeah, that's the name. Byron Lowry. He was very prominent on the California road racing scene at the same time as Scobey. I think Scobey was a bit faster. I wonder if those guys ever raced. (Maybe Scobey can help us out here?) |

i believe that Lowry had a marathon best of 2:21. Can't recall any other times. |

I remember Charlie Boatright on the OSU 4 mile relay teams. I remember Kaal, Rose and Halberstadt. |

Yes, and you could add mike Manke to that group. All were part of a group that Tom Von Ruden helped put together at OSU. Von Ruden ran with Igloi in the late 60s. |

Yes, I ran against Manke in college. Beat him once, at the KU Relays. He and Charlie McMullen had some great duels. So Von Ruden was coaching the distance men down there? I didn't think it was Ralph Tate; but typically, the foreign guys (at most schools) already show up in top shape and train on their own alot. Not sure about the South African contingent there at OSU. |

Tom coached the team from 1969 to Fall 1971 if I recall correctly. We continued to train together using many of the workouts and schedules he set-up. It was an unusual group of highly motivated individuals, that could actually continue to progress without a coach. The "distance coachless" 1972 and 1973 Cross Country teams won the Big Eight, and finished 7th and 5th at the NCAA Meet respectively. There were many solid non-South Africans during those the early 70s including: Manke, Rose, Boatright, George Stewart, Mike Cole, John Holderman, Royce Chancellor, among others. Surely South Africans Kaal, Halberstadt, Colin Cumming, Trevor Villoen, et al. were anchors for those teams both on and off relays. |

were you there when a 1/4 miler from KC, came down there in 72-73 year? Chuck Stiley, the Ks. State champ, from SM East? I didn't hear much about him in college after watching him run so well in high school. |
