Saw the article on the ’84 trials on Running Times website today. A few things struck me as I put ’84 in the context of this year’s trials:
-The sheer depth of competition. 13 men ran 2:12 or faster in 1984 as compared to 7 in 2012. 186 men ran 2:19 or faster in 1984 as compared to 38 in 2012.
-The snazzy facial hair. Look at those staches in the lead pack.
-Quality of finishing times. Four men under 2:12 despite 92% humidity and a headwind.
Despite all that is made on websites like this and in the running press with regard to advances in training (altitude, highly specific tempo work, drills, diet, etc.), professional running groups (Nike Oregon, Mammoth Track Club, Hansons, etc.), high-profile coaches (Salazar, Mahon, etc.) and technology (alter-G treadmills, lactate testing, cryo recover, etc.), it can be argued convincingly that the quality of US men’s marathoning was higher in the early-to-mid 80’s. These guys did it without any financial support, specialized coaching or high tech recovery.
This makes me wonder, do we really know anything more about training in current day then we knew close to 30 years ago? Perhaps some will say that it is obvious that we don’t. That being said, there seem to be a lot of professional coaches and those in the running press that will tell you differently.
