Keep in mind:
1) ~60% of population is overweight
2) ~30% of population is obese
For the obese, no way they cover a mile in less than 16 minutes. For the overweight, no way they cover it in less than 12.

Depends on what you mean by fat. If the person is say 30 pounds over ideal weight, and the 2 seconds pppm is remotely true, then that's saying the average lean male could guy out a 6:00.
At my absolutely fittest, when I was running 40-50 miles a week, I could never have run 6:00 for the mile. I was just about capable of running that pace for half a mile.
IOW, no chance.
I'd personally guess 8-8:30 given that the average person is a good 30-50 pounds overweight.
And there is no way that people who are 30-50 pounds overweight can drop an 8:00 either.
Let me be clear with you - in the real world of hobby joggers, most of us are pretty happy if we work our way up to an 8 minute mile. That's an accomplishment. That's *fast* for us. We started off walking and running 12 or 13 minutes miles. We still remember the first day we ran a mile without stopping and our first sub 10 minute mile.
I'll pause here while you point fingers at us and laugh.
Right now the average 30 year old male could not run a mile without stopping. The average time is going to be between 10 and 15 minutes.
I'm feeling mighty good about my mile time just reading this thread....
I estimate that I usually walk around 12-15 minute pace and could maybe go a minute or two faster than that if I'm late or something. Whenever I'm walking with other people I have to slow down a lot. Considering I rarely walk with obese people and that's now a large part of the population, I would be willing to put it as high as 25:00 or 30:00 pace for an average of the general population. Many of them probably struggle to even walk a mile. I know lots of skinny people who think that's a long way to walk.

Yes way. In training no less. Did I mention I live next to a stable?

These are ridiculous statements. I've heard about 33% of the American population is overweight or obese but am certainly not ready to make that claim because I don't have a reliable source. If you want to be taken seriously, show us where you got that from because it sure looks like you just pulled those numbers out of your a$$.
According to the Center for Disease Control, 33.9% of Americans over age 20 are obese. 34.4% are overweight but not obese. Thus, 68.3% of Americans over 20 are either obese or overweight. Data is for 2007-2008.
probably sub 6 in Japan
some fat a$$ douche bag former wannabe hockey player who probably is so fat that he can't change the remote from the preds/sabres game to the rangers/bruins game will never complete the mile because he is too fat and lazy and too busy banging a runnergirl. This means that that his time will be infinity which means the average will be infinity divided by however many people there are which will by default be infinity.
My older brother is an interesting case, and I will outline his stats related to this:
30 year old male
Ran in high school, maybe 5:15 for a mile (at 6'3", 150 lbs)
Has cystic fibrosis - deals with a lot of lung congestion, and has his whole life (it is a genetic condition, for those who don't know)
Currently runs about 5-10 mpw (also cross trains some), has a lot of leg injuries due in large part to the fact that he now weighs 210 lbs.
Ran a mile this past fall in 7:15. That was not in a race, but running pretty hard; I doubt he could go much faster without losing a little weight/running more.

There may not be many Generals who are 30 years old, but of the ones that are, I'd guess that they stay in decent shape, and therefore your answer is 7:49.
Funny. I actually LOLed.

I think the median would be around 8:00 assuming decent pacing.
It is only a mile, anybody with any endurance that isn't way fat could probably gut out a 7:00. There are a lot of fatties, so I'll go with 8:00
The 50th percentile for the Presidential Physical Fitness test is 7:04 for 17 year old males (17 is as high as it goes age wise). So I would guess that 8:00 for 30 year olds is probably a bit on the high side.

Because a 17 year old and a 30 year old have the same lifestyles. Most kids are drinking (maybe smoking) and eating ten times the junk food the second they get away from mommy and daddy.
9-10:00
You guys are living in the LR bubble if you think 730-800 is "average"
Some of you need to go look at your local 5k road race times and see what most people run for a 5k. Then keep in mind these are very small % of people that actually run. I would be shocked if it was below 10 minutes taking out all the DNF's.
I know plenty of athletic 30 years old that don't run 5Ks. Also, the mile is kinder to them since it is less than 1/3 the distance!
The problem isn't the athletic 30 year old you know, it is the majority of 30 year olds that aren't athletic. If you are a healthy runner, chances are most of the people you know are healthy and active as well. Most the of country isn't healthy or active.
For every 30 year old who goes to the gym a few times a week, likes to play pickup basketball games and tries to keep off the extra pounds there are 5 who sit around eating cheese wiz straight out the bottle and consider walking to the other side of the mall a workout.

Most 30 year olds have already let their fitness go. On top of that, so many are mentally weak and scared of a little pain. A lot of men who are physically capable of finishing would give up, thinking they couldn't make it.
This is a very good point. I think mental strength is worth a significant fraction of mile time.

You need to look at 30yo males. I doubt that 30% of them are overweight or 60% obese. It's probably more like 20%/40%.
I am going to go with 9min.
