I will be heading to The University of Oregon early next year. Very excited about the opportunity.
Does anyone know how old he is? I don't know much about him but his dad was pretty good!

For a minute I had to think "Is Borzakovskiy even eligible??"
This site shows his PRs, and that he was born in 1994,
If he is on anything more than books this would be the worst pick up ever
His dad was a whole lot faster at that age than Freddy. 4:03 for the 1500m, is that even scholarship material these days?
4:03 for 1500 is equivalent to a 4:23 mile. I assume that he is going to UO and just walking on to the track team. 4:23 is a decent walk on time. I assume that he could have walked on in any division 1 school. However, I'm not sure how much racing he will get to do at Oregon. In 95% of the div 1 schools, 4:23 is fine, but Oregon?
It looks like he ran a 1:54 as a 16 year old.. definitely good enough to show some potential and he's worth the risk with a dad as fast as his.
He's Australian?
Ovett moved to Australia many, many years ago (to the Gold Coast) and he became a resident and then, I assume, citizen. Australia has a 'fast track citizenship' system for outstanding sport stars and other talented individuals.
Fred Ovett (Steve's son) will be good, because he has dabbled in several sports in Australia, including basketball (yes, Australia has their own version of the NBA!) and other sports. His 1.54 and 4.03 were done off low mileage. His potential is enormous because he is under trained.
Ghost in Saudi,
I see Freddy race often as my eldest son races at similar competitions. I know he ran 1:52:1 as a 16 year old at a crappy club meet as I saw it first hand. He is a thoroughbread, v-tall and lean, and moves better than any other junior I've seen. I've also spoken to his dad, who coaches Freddy and said that he trains alone, says that all his kid needs is 'time' and that 'he will get there eventually' (with a cheecky grin!)... awesome dude, better than coe who snubbed me at his book launch... good luck to the young lad.
Thoroughbread? Is that like whole wheat?
Or maybe he will rock the house as did some guy named Cruz from Brazil.
1:48.5
[Thats my prediction yo.
He's running those times on 20-30 miles a week, amazing!
Seneca Lassiter ran 3:54 for 1500 in high school off ~20 mpw.
Ovett would not qualify for the California State High School Championships with that mile time. I also find it hard to believe that the Steve Ovett who ran >100 mpw in the winter with Harry Wilson and ran 3X a day on some weekends would have his son that undertrained. Steve Ovett did apparently run only about 20 mpw in comp season, but I sense there is something that isn't being said here.
I bet he's got that extra muscle in his leg that makes black people so fast
Great pick up.
The kid is multi sport and will lean down. A little "I.M Hypoxia," "thyroid replacement," and "exercise induced asma" and he'll be a beast.
I know for a fact that he mainly concentrates on the 800 at the moment to develop his speed. That 15 was probably in a tactical race, don't judge him on it, the lad isn't a miler yet. It will be cool to have a 'name' in the NCAA comp.
the kid might blossom as a miler. doesn't look like much of an 800m runner to me, though.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
