Believe it or not, I do know a thing or two about track and field. Perhaps I didn't make my point clear enough... Sure, a lot of great coaches would take on Kentucky. I said not many on the previous poster's list would take it. The SEC is brutal, and Kentucky has done nothing to show that it really wants to compete in that conference in any other sport but basketball. Without a serious commitment to track, the big guns on the list won't want to risk their careers. And since we do not know the salary or any of the details of the hire, Steele may be the best choice available. We can all second guess any hiring, but we don't have a clue what goes on behind the scene.
I Guess many people on this board was wrong and once again the track official was right... Hahahaha
EDRICK FLOREAL- New Kentucky Director of T&F/XC
http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/c-track/spec-rel/070912aaa.htmlI've been a proud supporter of Kentucky Athletics for over 35 years. This hire might be the single proudest moment in UK sports for me (yes, higher than Cal). This means there is a TRUE investment made in the purest sport on earth!
GREAT HIRE MITCH BARNHART!!!
UK made a big time hire. Congrats to Mitch Barnhart. Now is the time to become a competitor in the SEC.
No offense to Kentucky, but I really have to wonder why somebody would leave the Farm to go there.
Gauson to Illinois. International ties is what Illinois wants.
Great hire! congrats to UK.

1) SEC Head Coaching Opportunity
2) Less academic recruiting restrictions
3) Higher Salary
4) Lower cost of living
5) No more mention of Vin Lananna
6) Prior experience at Kentucky with recruiting success
7) Weak cross country/ distance conference
8) New $14 mill outdoor track (near completion)
9) Great over sized indoor track
10) Less political pressure (Not filling big shoes)
Looks like an open checkbook, so I can't wait to see what the rest of the staff looks like. MANY great assistants have coached at UK in the the past and present with far less resources and NO outdoor track. Kentucky will attract some of the nations best assistants as well...
GO CATS!!!
You've never coached have you

1) SEC Head Coaching Opportunity
Fair enough- can't argue this at all
2) Less academic recruiting restrictions
In CC/Track this isn't that much of a liability, but I do see your point
3) Higher Salary
Do we know this for sure?
4) Lower cost of living
Can't argue this as well
5) No more mention of Vin Lananna
I really don't think this was a negative as Vin was well in the rear view mirror.
6) Prior experience at Kentucky with recruiting success
This is somewhat debatable, but obviously UK felt this to be true or they would not have made him an offer.
7) Weak cross country/ distance conference
I would argue this-particularly with the addition of TAMU.
8) New $14 mill outdoor track (near completion)
This is a big plus.
9) Great over sized indoor track
This is all well and good unless you consider that Stanford doesn't need an indoor facility due to great weather.
10) Less political pressure (Not filling big shoes)
I think the plus for Floreal is more likely to not having to skew his team toward strength in distances such as was the case at Stanford. If you can get football players out for track as Urban Meyer allowed at Florida, then he's got a big advantage.
If you make $30,000 in Lexington, KY you would need to make $50,000 in Palo Alto to have the same standard of living. Here's the site for that calculation:
http://www.areavibes.com/cost-of-living-calculator/
.
You can bet that Kentucky will pay more than Stanford did. Stanford doesn't pay their coaches exceptionally well. I know that most people on this site think that Palo Alto is the home of Jesus Christ and his Father. It's a nice place but it costs WAAY to much to live there.
In addition, Floreal is a sprints/jumps guy. SEC is sprints/Jumps country. He will have a great deal more pressure to perform in those areas so that may be an issue, esp. with A&M moving into the neighborhood. As good as Edrick may be he will struggle with beating the LSU's, Florida's, and Texas A&M's on any kind of regular basis in the events that he coaches.
I think that when you coach at Stanford you are protected, in effect, by Stanford. At Kentucky, in the SEC, he will be exposed and we will see what kind of Head Coach he is when all he has to sell is...well...Kentucky. I like Edrick a lot and I hope he kicks a$$ in Lexington. I just worry that it will be a tough sale against so many other great coaches in a sprint heavy conference.
Nobody outside of Virginia give a $hit about UVA, expecially on the track.

WTF is going on at Virginia????
Matt Sparks of SIU might be had if Illinois will lift the salary a bit. However, all of the AD's hires seem to come from the MAC, but since most of them have cut their XC/Track programs that will be drying up.
However, Turk was impressed with the two foreign recruits Gavin got in for next year so apparently wants some foreign connection which would be good news for the Butler or Tulsa assistants.
