This guy is the man. Has to be a dark horse for indoors after doing this solo and especially how the season has just begun.

I'd guess he hasn't started indoors and simply went to get this before he takes his down time. He ran that turkey trot so I'd say with 99% confidence that he is still riding out his peak.
That said he will be a 13:20 or better guy come May.

peaking too soon. over racing

Nah, this is smart. Use the fitness from cross, knock out the auto, take some down time and then get ready to rock come March at the championship.

Exactly. This guy knew what he was doing here.
Yes, I'd like to hear from all the geniuses who were so sure that Indiana was peaking too early last year running those fast auto marks at home meets in dec and jan....

conventional wisdom sucks!
Go Diego! Go!
Why can't you ride a high level of fitness?
Ope... I just got top 10 in NCAA cross... better spend two weeks on the couch followed by 2 weeks of walking to 'ease' back into it. FU conventional wisdom!
Indiana can't be all that happy with no AQ's (13:44.60). Still, nice times for Hubers and Poore.

Arkansas and Oregon back in the day used to knock out qualifiers right after cross. Smart. Oregon at that time wasn't into indoors but one year they ran a outdoor 10,000 and a redshirt freshman named Terrence Mahone qualified that way.
Take a little 2 week break and jump back on the horse. I like it.

How did that work out for them at ncaa in June?
This makes so much sense. Smart move. Use the fitness you still have hanging around from xc to bang out a great race and get an auto. THEN take the down time. It's a long time until June

Haha did you watch the steeple?
Here are the steeple results, with Indiana taking 3-6-10 and Hubers placed 8th in the 5000m in 13:43. They ran pretty damn well come June.
Learn the sport. And by the way, the likes of Lagat, Rupp, Bekele, Gebrselassie, have all set WR or AR in January and gone on to run tremendously well come August.
1 Matt Hughes SR Louisville 8:24.87 S 10
2 Donn Cabral JR Princeton 8:32.14 8
3 Andrew Poore JR Indiana 8:36.40 6
4 John Sullivan SR Stanford 8:37.74 5
5 Brett Hales SR Weber State 8:37.96 4
6 De'Sean Turner JR Indiana 8:39.12 3
7 Benjamin Johnson JR Stanford 8:40.75 2
8 Justin Tyner SR Air Force 8:40.83 1
9 Craig Forys JR Michigan 8:44.88
10 Andy Weatherford JR Indiana 8:47.72
11 Travis Mahoney JR Temple 8:52.54
12 Hillary Bor SR Iowa State 8:54.93
13 Steve Finley SR Oregon 9:05.94
Nowhere near "solo" with Turner rabbitting through 3600m perfectly.
I would be worried about all the guys who didn't get a qualifier, what now?
The fact that guys can perform well in the steeple at NCAA's is not really evidence of great peaking. Cabral and Poore are so much better flat runners than anyone else in the field!
Watch the video on flotrack, he was solo the whole time. He decided to go out ahead of the pacer.
Call it what you want, but I'd call that front running rather than solo, which, for most runners is at least as hard if not harder than solo. What's the difference, you ask.
In a solo effort, the runner is so much better than the competition that even if he falters or slows down significantly he will still win. In a front running effort - which is what I would call this race - the competition is not far off and if the runner falters he will be caught and passed.
Knocking out a six second win from the front over a tough field is a good working definition of a runner with balls.
No one said it was evidence of great peaking. They said they didn't peak too early an were still able to run at a high level in June.
Diego will win the olympics
