Title says it all: Would Chelenga have won easily or would there have been some head to head battle all race.

A better question: Who would have won, Chelanga, Lalang, or Galen Rupp?
What about Cheserek? Could he hang with Lalang? I think he might be able to as a college freshman.

Are you talking about junior year Rupp or senior year Rupp. Cause Rupp was unbeatable his senior year. He might have lost it his junior year.
I'd say:
Rupp>Chelenga>Lalang
Of course this is based on Rupp and Chelenga's senior year. Lawi has three more years to prove me wrong.

What do you mean he might have lost his junior year? He did lose his junior year.
P.S. I am talking about Galen Rupp right now, not the past. Could he have beaten Chelanga and Lalang today? I am not sure.
you dont think the current Galen Rupp could have won this race today? the Galen Rupp who ran 26:48 for 10k only 2 months ago?

Yes, I think Rupp probably would have won this race today, but who knows, especially if Chelanga were thrown into the mix.
Tim Tebow.
It's Chelanga, with an "a". I think he would have beaten Lalang.
You remember Chelanga went 27:08 his senior year at payton jordan right?? He was absolutely unstoppable his senior year. I would take him over Galen as a senior anyday. Lalang could be as good or better than Chelanga by his senior year, but he probably wont stay that long. And hes a freshman so probably wouldnt have beat him today had they raced.

He was stoppable, just not in XC
I would say it would be close,All depends if Sammy went out like Junior year and slowed like that.
LAWI LALANG
No doubt that Lalang would have beaten Chelanga and Rupp. Lalang could be the first collegian to run sub 27 minute 10000m if he stays healthy, decides to target that time, and remain a collegian for at least 2 years.
Keeping it real!
How good is Lalang? ...very good, I will even say great, but right now he is a great NCAA athlete. Keep in mind that several of the top athletes in that race where chasing a team championship and perhaps could have made that race more competitive if that took some risks. I am not saying any of them could have beaten Lalang, but I suspect it would have been a closer finish.
Can Lalang hang with Rupp and Chelenga right now, I seriously doubt it. Half of the athletes in that NCAA race are only 14 and 29 minuite 5k/10k types...that's a tempo run for world class distance runners. Rupp ran with the best distance runners in the world until a lap to go at the WC and ran a 10k time that less than a dozen athletes have ever done. And a month ago, Chelenga went toe-to-toe with some of the best in the world in his half marathon debut. That my friend is a long way from winning against NCAA level athletes. Keep in mind that there have been NCAA 2x XC champs who barely made a dent at the world class level.
Could Lalang have beaten Rupp in '09 or Chelenga in '10? Maybe, but probably not; Rupp ran about the same time as Lalang on the LG course in '09, but he was racing and was in crusie control for the last mile gearing up for a big push the last couple hundred meters. Rupp was not completely spent after his '09 race, he actually ran harder his junior year than his senior year. In '10, Chelenga ran faster on the LG cousre than Lalang did and he was unopposed the entire race and broke the NCAA 10k record 5 months latter.
Obviously Lalang is only a freshman and will get better, but you have to put things in perpective for right now. Lalang is not the only athlete to have a dominating NCAA XC victory and he is not the only freshman to win.
seems all the kenyan greats are somehow related to another kenyan great. does he have any famous/fast brothers/sisters/cousins/mom/dad? anyone "in the know"? probably nice to have lagat and his contingent there to train with.
boaz lalang
What's the LG course?
I was wondering why the times were so fast.
I don't think it matters which east african would have won.
garble garbla aha!!
Haile Gebresalasi would've won!
My point is... this is a weak discussion to be on the front page.
