German never reclaimed the US JR record in the 5000m, because he wasn't a previous holder of it. He lost to Derrick, and would have lost again to him at 5000m NCAAs, and wouldn't have won 1500m if it wasn't a weak field (or even placed well), without Olympians Rupp (won 5000m and 10000m) and Wheating (won 800m) and Centro (eventual WC bronze medalist). Ok, yeah, German got the 5000m Jr. record from Derrick in a different race, when he should have been training for XC instead and ended up getting 97th as a Soph, so impressive. |
