It's still "Say Relax." What about the question... how would other sports fare - what would football, basketball and baseball "gomers" do - if winners were announced more than ten minutes after the race was over I'm guessing the sports would be about as popular as running is.
frankie says relax wrote:
hmmm, if i recall they got the winners trophy to both wisco and g-town pretty quick after the race. i think it came fast enough for the winners and the overall top teams/individuals. its running gomers like all the people on this board who can't wait more that 10 minutes for the rest of the results.
seriously, what's the rush to find out who was 58th overall? its not like you have to wait until tomorrow. ease up, little ponies...keep some perspective.
you can't possibly believe the ONLY reason running isn't as popular as bball/football/baseball is because cross country results aren't instantly available? i'm gonna go out on a limb and say it has more to do with running being less spectator friendly to the masses.
and correct me if i'm wrong, track results are pretty much instantaneous, no?
(you are right though...frakie does 'say' relax)
Wisconsin's #6 was supposed to be weak, but Shields 86th was only 14 places and 7 seconds behind OSU's #6 and beat the #6 of everybody else. In addition, Wisconsin's #5 beat everyone else's #4 and the #3 of all but OSU and Colorado.
Darling (and Brice) had the only finishes below expectations, I think.

Coogan's daughter has really been coming on. Wonder how she did.
She won it for them. Without her outstanding performance as the 5th runner they finished outside of the top 3. #2 freshman in the nation!

Yeah, PSU continues to do a great job coming from behind when you least expect it.
Wait, are you talking to me? I don't get it.

not quite as good wrote:Yeah, I have to say that Fernandez is such a disappointment. I'd be fine if he went for it and fell to 97th again. Really, I would. But the guy seems to have basically just had his spirit broken. No desire to win at all, just a role player. Who would have predicted that Puskedra and Derrick would be up there fighting for it ever year, and Fernandez wouldn't even try.
Agreed. I don't think he tried to get into the top 5 overall. Fernandez didn't need to pull Colby Lowe along after the 8k mark. Fernandez should have hammered the last 2k and tired to pass as many people as possible.
Ahmed 5th
Colby 10th
German 11th
A year ago they were way ahead of Ahmed. Had Colby, German & Ahmed finished 5th, 6th, &7th, that would have been a 12 point turnaround. German, however, should have been fighting for the win, not just coasting into 5th or 11th.
The difference with Wisconsin is that all their runners ran hard today, and hard through the season. Not 400 reps hard, but 10k hard.
Lot of data here but what we need is the sort for next seasons returning runners .
you can't possibly believe the ONLY reason running isn't as popular as bball/football/baseball is because cross country results aren't instantly available? i'm gonna go out on a limb and say it has more to do with running being less spectator friendly to the masses.
That is part of the reason for the decline in interest in distance running in this country. The other reason was glaringly on display today: a foreigner, Lalang, is competing in an American collegiate race, for out-running everyone else, dominating the broadcast coverage to the exclusion of everyone else. Until the NCAA steps up and addresses the unethical recruitment of foreigners by coaches fishing for an unfair advantage, the American spectator is going to increasingly turn away. And, the American athlete will turn away, too. Lalang was the focus of over 95% of the NCAA coverage today. While a big part of this is the NCAA's inability to provide proper coverage of an event that included over 250 other runners, the fact that some misguided coach goes to Kenya and brings in a guy who is in such a different league as to crush the Americans in an American college event is the real story here.
it isn't that 10k is "so boring," it's that the championship courses, for the most part, look like road races.
i'm of the opinion that cross country courses should be very unfriendly, with a lot of environmental hardships and challenges. give the heartier athlete a chance to be in the mix with the elite--but often effete--guys at the front.

Very good point. Most of the effetes running the front of these golf course XC venues would get eaten alive by a Van Cortlandt or a Sunken Meadow. Couldn't agree more. Killer hills, tight turns, bales of hay, whatever; make them work for the title. Show us some legitimate athletic prowess.
