Hi I was wondering if its possible to run a sub 18 3 mile off more mileage alone. I was running about 40 miles a week with a lot of speedwork, but I always seem to get injured when I do intervals or race pace efforts, so I was wondering If I just built up to 50-60 miles a week could I run it? If so, when will these benefits of high mileage be reaped? Current PR's are 5:37 for 1600m 12:00 2 mile 20:30 3 mile (maybe could've gone faster but injured all XC season) |

If you were running only 40 mpw w/ speedwork (average for HS) and you only ran 20:30 AND got injured, it shows that you are weak and probably won't be able to handle 60 mpw. Just run 30 mpw, accept your slowness for now and build-up slowly. You are injury-prone. |

Yes it's possible. I've ran 16:30 for 5k and 4:45,mile off of just mileage, no workouts... And that mileage was 50 miles per week. I've also ran 15:10 for 5k and 4:24 mile off of marathon high mileage and marathon Mileage and absolutely no speed work or short intervals whatsoever |

bump...found this thread while searching something else. Just to update, from 40 mpw I started doing regular doubles and now run 60-75 mpw, started doing speed work mid-February. Kept up the mileage, and reaped big benefits, bigger than I thought. Didn't get injured during the mileage build up to 75, but got a small injury when starting speed work, and now do only 2 hard sessions a week, instead of 4. From 5:37 and 12:00, I went to 5:04 and 10:39. I know these aren't particularly fast times, but much better than where I was at before, I set 5:15 and 11:00 as my goals. Now hoping to be under 5 and 10:30. |

More impressed with the mileage and training, that takes serious dedication, most HSers don't do that. Curious to deer what others think about running 70 mpw and regular doubles as an HS freshman, is it too risky and will it lead to injury and burnout? |

Everyone is different, but in general I think 70 mpw on doubles would probably be too much for a freshman. Freshman year is generally more about getting used to the intensity of high school vs. middle school training and competition, and trying to do too much too soon (in terms of volume) on top of that is not a good recipe for future success. |

That is great to hear! I like when people give updates after asking for training advice. Keep up the great running. There is another thread now about lower milage and injury. http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=4519027&page=0 Have you done anything that you think might have helped you stay healthy? |
