Serious question here...
Why does the greatest city in the world, and one with one of the strongest running communities in the world not have a Turkey Trot???? I know they used to have one 10 years ago....what happened? What's the deal?

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade perhaps?
Mary set forth in stone "There shalt not be a Turkey Trot within my domain as long as I am the chosen all powerful one"
Does Brooklyn count? Because Coney Island has a Turkey Trot. Oddly NOT on Thanksgiving day, but the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Whatever.
Long Beach City Council Turkey Trot is also Sunday the 20th.
There is a solid 5 miler in Prospect Park. It used to be a NYRR event until about 2002, don't know why they dropped it. Probably because getting the large number of volunteers required on Thanksgiving morning is a no go.
Southport, CT has the best around TriState in my opinion, it starts right by the Southport Station, easy ride on Metro North.
That's because they'd have old toothless broolyners tally ho-ing the streets screaming "Hurry up feller! Or I'm going to gooble you up!"
November 24, Thursday, Lou Marli Turkey Day Classic, Clove Lakes, Staten Island
Because New York sucks. Even Islamabad has a Turkey Trot.

+1, this is a fun event, highly recommended. I don't think it's so much the volunteer problem but more that the NYRR staff doesn't want to work on holidays. There's also no 4th of July run or Christmas run, I don't think there is anything on memorial day either.
Anyway, there is more than just NYRR and this event is organized by Prospect Park Track Club.
Just make sure you stay away from those R'n'R races...
possible reasons:
- still hung over from the massive undertaking of the marathon(?)
- there is a 4-mile race in CP, just not billed as 'Turkey Trot'(might not be on Thursday)
- Knickerbocker 60 km use to be the Saturday after Thanksgiving / and other existing events mentioned by other posters (just not 'downtown')
Turkey Trots aren't for real runners, and NYC (at least Manhattan) is all about serious running.

The greatest city in the world doesn't have a turkey trot because they don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Austria.
Not sure why NYC doesn't have a turkey trot, though.
Are you sure???? wrote:

Yup, and this is the best race there is.
No entry fee. Bring some canned goods that are donated.
Minimal prizes - just old school go out and run. Fun times.
Brooklyn is part of NYC..
yes they use to have a 5 miler in prospect park...
Because they have the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
I assume its because New York Road Runners staff get a long and deserved weekend off and there's no other organization else capable of staging an event for 5,000 people.
Brooklyn is part of NYC and they do have a Turkey Trot.
