BYU vs. Portland

Notice how it was essentially scored as a dual meet. 12 runners were in from BYU and Portland before anyone else in the conference.

Hope they can hold on to it through nationals. BYU has had a habit of underperforming when it counts, I would rather have seen them coast through this one.

Oh well, gotta trust Eyestone knows what he's doing. Go BYU!

It's kinda funny that by adding a team to the conference they are actually shrinking the conference down to two teams. I'd be amazed if anyone from the other schools ever makes the all WCC team ever again and I have to imagine the freshman and coach of the year award will just be swapped back and forth between UP and BYU. All you're ever going to see is these two teams winning every single award they hand out at the meet year in and year out.

Most college coaches believe that conference counts and if that is the case, BYU did not underperform today. Had BYU coasted, Portland would have rolled to their 33rd consecutive conference crown. I think you will see the Cougars coast at regionals, when it doesn't count, and then ramp up for their best race of the year in Terre Haute. Go Cougars!

Shrinking??

It has been a one team conference whether it was Nevada Reno or Portland. A reason other schools are not sharing in the spoils of the awards is that the conference expanded team entries to 9 and Portland brought its A team. Imagine how many individual awards in the past were denied to Porltand athletes that did not compete. It appears as long as BYU is in the conference, the best athletes in the conference are being recognized with awards that in the past were garnered by athletes that benefitted from the restriction of 7 per team and absence of Porltand's best.

Ed will get it right he is learning. He will end up one of our better coaches over time.

Might be a good person to head up coaching education , younger , smarter with a broader view than the current group. Not bound to USATF politics

Ahh, thanks. Tough luck for him. I knew he'd been their #5, so I was wondering why he didn't show up. Put him in there and they're even a bit better -- especially with the depth at 5/6

"Demaree and Reid All-WCC As Portland's Streak is Snapped at WCC Cross" is the headline on Santa Clara's website. The streak is an embarassment, plus to to have lost every year that a WCC Championship has been held to Portland. To draw attention to it in a headline and not be the team that defeated Portland to end the streak is poor sportamanship. Beating LMU's team of Footlocker kids or continuing their unbeaten streak against Gonzaga's legendary Hall of Fame coach would have been more relevant to the story headline if Santa Clara wanted to relish in another's school defeat.
