Honestly it varies, this week looks like a 9:00 week. Next week it could be 7:30, sure.
They give salaried employees an extra weeks vacation here to make up for this, but they end up getting way more than that extra week (which i have not even had the chance to take yet)

believe it or not i work in the public sector, and believe me they don't pay huge salaries for doing nothing anymore, they keep having to cut back, but the work doesn't just go away.
First, you have a job. Be thankful for that in today's economy. Second, what you're having to do is not something people have never had to do. It's called being an employee. Though it may suck, lots of people WISH they had to worry about working too much right now. Lots of people have given you good advice in this thread.
yeah, i guess the answer is to suck it up until i find something else.
I'm calling BS. unless you are in a very high level position, no public employee can be forced to work that many hours without OT or comp time. It would very difficult if not impossible for your boss to fire you if you refuse to work those extra hours.
I'm a contractual employee - so my fear is that they just won't renew my contract. You're right about them not being able to fire me for this, i think. But like i was saying they don't have to renew me after my contract expires.

That being the case - I am surprised that "hours per week" isn't quantified within the contract. Or is it?
Are you working thru an agency? If so you still should be compensated for extra hours. I worked through a temp company for a state gov't agency and the first thing they told me was that I can't work over 40hrs because they did not have OT in the budget, even though it was a salary contract job. This was in NY BTW.
speak to her about it, but don't simply demand that u don't work late. perhaps come up with a reasonable compromise or solution/way to get the work done while still having your own family time. either that or get another job, or start your own business and be your own boss.

Totally. I'm on a long-term contract and I can't work any OT unless it's approved. And they aren't approving any OT. My situation may be different as my contract is through a 3rd party. I work for a company who contracts me to a company.
Also, my girlfriend used to work on contract for the public sector and she was not able to work more than 20 hours a week. When she did they let it slide for a couple weeks then they clamped down super hard.
This sounds efd up.
Put one years take home pay in the bank. That way you can always walk away if that professional mannered conversation doesn't come off too well. Make this a priority.
I didn't see what type of job you have but if it's in finance, long grueling hours are typical.
The ability to walk away from jobs that go bad will be one of the greatest powers you can develop.
But I am better at finding and leaving jobs than keeping them.

They might not fire you, but what they might start saying is "This work is due Friday 5pm. You figure out how to work your schedule to make it happen." I am salaried in the tech industry and thats what happens a lot to me. They dont necessarily say you have to work till 9pm, but I have to get the work done. And the amount of work means staying late or working from home nights and weekends.

You're doing it wrong. If you are under them they do most of the work.
Nobody with a good salaried job only works 40 hours a week. Grow a pair and get to work or accept the fact that you're going to be doomed to jobs with low annual wages.
