The race is October 9th. I believe the 4 mile world best is 17:07 by Eliud Kipchoge from 2007. Perhaps Kenenisa has a shot at this.

Link? This should be a great race.
Well apparently Gerry Lindgren ran 16:08 for 4 miles in 1964.

Nice catch, do you have a link to the press release/whatever it is where you found it?
17:07 is 4:16.75/per mile. K Bekele's 10k record is 26:17 (4:13.8/mile). 5k record is 12:37 (4:03/mile). So clearly, it WAS within his abilities. Granted he's been off for two years but then again he ran a 26:43 (4:17.9/mile).
I think he could break the record, but who knows if he wants to? It might just be to get back into the groove.

Training runs don't count.

It was an xc race at Mt. Sac
I had forgotten that Yenew Alamirew dipped under Kipchoge's time with a 17:06 last year. Here is the finish where Tariku catches Yenew and then Yenew sprints in ahead...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfQ1Um1gF4oCool vid, you really see the speed at which he is running. Damn I wish I was that fast...
Startlist ? Who else is running ? Where is Yenew ?

I'm glad to see he is running a road race, but I don't see him breaking 17:06 on his own. For it to happen, someone will have to drag him at least 3 miles on record pace. I say this only because I still think he is not as sharp as he could be.
There was a better video floating around some where that showed the start and where he broke away, and I too remember thinking "wow, they're hauling ass"
how the hell was this race not coverd by letsrun. Alamurew is a hoss. will he be racing against Bekele?
4 days away!

Does anybody know Bekele's 6400 split in his 10K world record? I know that isn't a "full" four miles but it seems like he should have been under 17:07.
Bekele is just looking for an excuse to miss next year's Olympics with another injury. The last time he ran a road race(in The Netherlands), he went down with an injury for at least 18 months. I think he fears he will lose to Mo Farah and therefore looking for a way out of the confrontation with him. He should have waited and run a few more track races as well as xc to be sure his injuries are gone.

You sir are an idiot.
Or maybe he is in world-leading shape and wants to make some $'s from an appearance fee and win after sitting out for 18 months...
