the road is not the track.
Sometimes people just have an off day.

Got beat by the World Champ.

if that is the best you can bring to the discussion, go elsewhere.
What do you mean "what happened?" to her? It was a race, and she lost. Plain and simple. Jenny Simpson - the World Champ - beat her in what looked like an exciting finish. There's nothing shocking about the result.
Why does everyone jock Uceny so much on this board? She's accomplished very little when compared to the likes of Jenny Simpson, Alan Webb, and other oft hated-on athletes.
I get it, she had a great year. But I don't think she is at the the level where she is expected to win at every outing - especially when lining up against competitors with gold medals in their trophy cases.
And, Brojos, to call her 'the best in the World' last week? How does she deserve that title again? I agree that she's a great miler, but your Cornell bias has led to some pretty blatant editorializing in her favor.
The mile is not her event. I think like Fox News they wanted a few blonds in the mix.
JENNY SIMPSON MADE HER CHOOOOOOOOOKE! Too much pressure to try and beat the World Champ on the biggest US stage - NYC!!

True but fast is fast. And a race is a race.
Why even show up if you arn't going to bring it?
She didn't bring it today but, once again, her rival Jenny B.S. did. It's pretty obvious; Jenny wants it more. Jenny came to race and win.

Uh yeah. Uceny is no newscaster blonde.

Yes, Jenny won because she wanted to win more than Uceny. That's the only reason.
Removing the BroJo's bias, here are the actual world rankings, as per all-athletics.com
1. Maryam Yusuf JAMAL 84 BRN 1333
2. Morgan UCENY 85 USA 1329
3. Anna MISHCHENKO 83 UKR 1308
4. Hannah ENGLAND 87 GBR 1303
5. Kalkidan GEZAHEGNE 91 ETH 1295
6. Irene JELAGAT 88 KEN 1273
6. Jenny BARRINGER-SIMPSON 86 USA 1273
Not relevant.
Uceny ran more rabbited races.
Simpson geared her season around the race that mattered.
If we're going purely off objective standards, then who has a faster PR?

So did Morgan. She got tripped. Unfortunate but thats racing.

I like both athletes but you have to be fair here- Simpson hasn't run a PR in any event in 2 years. Uceny has been consistently dropping her PRs since 2009.
I don't want to choose sides but this argument about who is better is getting ridiculous. You can't compare the two. Its like trying to compare cars and boats
Simpson was injured, bra.
Not only did she make a comeback, she did it in her secondary event.
Listen, if Uceny is better, win a big race against your rivals. Until then, no one can say that Uceny is better, and no one should be surprised when she does not outperform Simpson.
I realize this is, by default, a Cornell Track and Field message board. We're all happy that your alum is doing really well on the national stage. I look forward to seeing if she can keep things going next year.

Clearly, Uceny is a better 1500 meter runner this season than Simpson. The Diamond League races are big races and Uceny won several. I would think the US Championships is a big race and Uceny won that. Yes, Simpson is the World Champ and you can't take that away from her. But it's not like she beat Uceny. There's no way of every knowing, but that race was shaping up real nicely for Uceny and I have a hard time picturing Simpson beating her, had Uceny not been tripped up.

Psychology plays a role in high level events like this. My take is that after the WC final disaster, Morgan had her "how do you like me now" event in Brussels to win the DL.
5th Avenue was Simpson's chance to back up her WC gold. She had more incentive after Morgan kicked her's and everyone else's butts in Brussels.
If there was one more race, I predict Uceny would win it.
Uceny/Simspon == Coe/Ovett? We could certainly use that to popularize the sport. Sadly, the doped-up Chinese put the WR totally out of reach, so we have gold medals and circuit championships (only) to look at.

These types of comments are illogical. I think we can all agree that Kiprop is the best miler on the planet, yet there are plenty of guys competing currently with faster PRs. And you think Jenny was "backing up" the gold medal with a road mile that no one cares about? What about Brussels? Wouldn't that have been the race to back up the gold? What happened in Brussels? Oh, that's right. Morgan dominated, as per the usual.
Look, there is a very big difference between the following two scenarios:
1) Being an "also ran" most of the season, then somehow falling ass-backwards into a gold medal because the favorite was tripped and fell.
and
2) Actually being the best runner in the world based on consistent and thorough domination throughout an entire season.
Also, did you not see Uceny's interview where she openly states that she was not looking forward to 5th Avenue, as she is not very good at racing downhill? Did you miss that? As an earlier poster stated, there is a big difference between the track and the road.
