Very sadd. Does it seem like there's been a lot of high-profile middle-aged guys dying in the running community lately to anyone else? Kind of scary to think that an apparently healthy person could die so young.

I didn't know that the gentleman's name was John Walsh. If this truly is the famous Mr. "Hadd," then the running world has truly lost a good man. Hadd advised me on my training when I ran 2:18 in Berlin and called me at my hotel in Germany after the race. Very sad news. Jason
HADD's approach to distance running.
Sad news... My thoughts are with his wife and family.
What strikes me as particuarly sad is this web site. I re-read one of the Hadd threads from 2002. It was shocking to see the exciting, helpful and troll free posts - well over 100 of them - compared to what this board has become.
Hadd was a class act. RIP.
Wow. I'm stunned to say the least. When Hadd contributed to a thread it was always worth reading. I took several of his threads and other links I found and printed them and studied them. He helped make me a better runner. He was so generous with his advice. The Hadd & Cabral discussion thread is one of the best on LR.
My thoughts go to his wife. It sounds as if they had a special relationship.
"Hadd has a fatal flaw; he cannot see someone doing something badly – yet with all their heart – and not want to do something to help."
The world could use a few more people like this. He will be missed.
These are terribly sad news.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Hadd, but his personality shone through his writing. He was genuinely helpful, always patient, witty, and he possessed a unique ability to explain concepts. His writing carried the beauty of simplicity. While aimed to instuct, his writing was also exteremely motivational.
I am writing to send the condolences of the running community in Israel, where Hadd's epic threads had (and continue to have) a vast influence.
May he rest in Peace.
Oh geez. Hadd probably had the most profound effect on my running after I reached 40. Realizing that I could no longer handle the work I'd done as a young man and through a few threads here, a private message board and a small handful of personal emails, Hadd taught me a patience I didn't know that I possessed. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Wow, I just heard the news. As an original 'Haddite' who had the pleasure of meeting John in person once, I can say there was never a more unselfish person. He gave to me, an aging and untalented runner, just as much time as he gave his Olympic hopefuls. He was truly a great man and will be missed by me and other letsrunners who understood his philosophy of squeezing from the bottom of the tube, of patience, of sequential training, and so much more.
My thoughts and prayers to his wife and kin, and to all who benefited from his sage advice. He certainly made his mark on this community,
Chris
One of my favorite LR training threads.

Guys like Hadd, Canova and Cabral make LR worthwhile.
Best Lets Run poster ever
Wow. Truly a shock, and very sad. 56 is just too young. I never met Hadd, but his connection to the best group of guys ever on this message board (JEH, Pete, Pantman, Tryon Creek, danm, HRE and a few others) says something about him for sure. The amount of time and effort he gave to help other runners was amazing. I'm sorry for your loss guys.
RIP Hadd.
his approach got me fired up to run. his passion was contagious, i'm terribly saddened i never met the man. may he rest in peace and may his wife and friends find peace
Really sad. My thoughts go out to his wife.
Since we are all mentioning the great threads he contributed to, I wanted to point out that he was still contributing during the summer of 2011 as Summer Blueprint:

John, you will be missed.
My condolences to his wife and his family.
Reading his articles/posts made me changed my training approach and after being an also-run for decades, I become a good competitive runner.
He really knew what training was about....
Very sad news indeed. RIP.
More info about John's passing. RIP brother.

Can anyone share how he ended up in Malta ? Where was he from originally ?
Considering the impact he had on the Lets Run message boards I would have thought the BroJos would have had something on the main page like a tribute or a link to one of the legendary threads, but there is nothing. Makes no sense to me. I always enjoyed the insight and training advice and benefitted greatly from it. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. What a loss.
