Emil Zatopek
1952 Helsinki Games
Gold- 10,000 (Olympic Record), July 20
Gold- 5,000 (Olympic record), July 22-24(finals)
Gold- Marathon (Olympic record), July 27
Isn't that what we dream of doing?
Agreed!
I would also put El Guerrouj's double Gold Medal at the 2004 Olympics up there as well.
El G in 2004 has to be up there. He beat 2 of the best ever in Bekele and Lagat - both in their prime.

beat me to it.
I was thinking EL G in 2004 as well. I was kind of hoping this thread would go a few pages without mentioning it, but oh wells.
Best double of all time? Hawaii Little League Baseball fans will say that it happened yesterday when Kahana Neal’s three-run double in the top of the seventh inning gave Pearl City, Hawaii, a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Upper Deerfield, New Jersey in a Little League World Series regional game in Michigan. And - no PEDs like Ramzi.
enter: dream doubles
jeremy wariner 400 800
44.25 1:39.00
Paavo Nurmi, 1924 OG. Won the 1500 in an Olympic record; less than an hour later, started the 5000 and won in an Olympic record. I'd say that's about the best double.
...Unless you disqualify it as being part of a quintuple, because he also won three more golds in that Games: 3000m team race, individual cross-country, team cross-country.
How about this one:
Alberto Juantorena
1:43.50 (wr)
44.26 (low altitude wr)
Is there anyone running today that could run both these times?
Ummm...ever heard of Jordan Hasay?
If you're strictly talking about doubles that either MJ 200/400 in 1996 or El G 1500/5000. But a triple trumps a double, therefore, without a doubt, Emil Z 5000/10000/M. Never done before and it will never be done again.

This one or El G's.

No way dude. Did you see LV's mile, 2 mile, 5000 double at indoor nats? Insane!
Cannot believe nobody has mentioned Viren's 'Double Double' from 72 & 76. It, along with Zatopek's triple in 52, will never be done again (even Gebrselassie and Bekele couldn't do it!). Phenomenal.
Though I am very fond of Zatopek and Nurmi, the best doubles of the "Modern Era" (of African dominance) are El G in 2004 and Bekele's 5 consecutive World Cross doubles from 2002-2006. No one else ever did it ONCE, and he did it 5 years in a row, running against Ben Limo, Gebre Gebremariam, Sileshi Sihine, Zersenay Tadese, Isaac Songok, many of whom were running a fresh race rather than doubling.
I agree. Even Viren's double wasn't during the era of African dominance (at least not quite yet). My money is still on Bekele for 2012, assuming he doubles.
Mark Everett USA in the 90's ran 1:43.20 800m & 44.59 400m.

FYI:
Double = 2
mile, 2 mile, 5000 = 3
3 = triple
Winning the 100m dash and the marathon in the Olympics would be the most impressive double I can think of!
