Alan Webb did an unusual triple at the JMU meet on Saturday. First up was the 800m, where Webb went out 2nd to last during a fast opening 400m that was run in around 51 seconds. He moved up throughout the race but was no match for Georgetown's Jesse O'Connell who ran 1:47.96 to easily defeat Webb who was 2nd in 1:49.36.
Roughly an hour later was the 1500m for Webb. Jason Jabaut served as the rabbit for the first 800, then Webb took over and led for most of the race (possibly serving as the rabbit) until Georgetown's Chris Lukezic shot by him with 200m to go going on to win in 3:41.59 over Webb's 3:42.21.
But even more surprising than Webb doubling at JMU was the fact that he showed up at the meet in a big red truck with a full keg of beer in the back. He made sure it was on ice before his races and then tried to get some of the other athletes to partake in the beverages afterwards.
Who knows maybe Webb was a bit upset because he missed out on the Nike Mile celebrating Bannister's sub 4 anniversary where beer apparentlly was served.
Webb apparently is your typical 21 year old, except for the fact that he makes a few hundred thousand dollars a year and can afford his own keg.
why a keg
what does it all mean alan
is he trying to be the guy everyone likes in us distance
Not sure if this is serious
So, you've not seen many "big red trucks" lately? Is that what's bothering you, bo bo?
THATS FUKEN AWESOME.
It happened.
its true, i was there. no big deal just some people getting together after the meet to have some fun
Kids that look up to webb read this website. Whether such things occur or not is one thing, but publisicing that this kid is in fact liek the rest of us shows a lack of class. A lot of kids think that to be good they should abstain from drinking etc. Putting this up on a message board does nothing further to help allen or US distance running, and yes I was there.
Mabye it shows that you can have a life and be a pretty good runner.
Just because someone drinks a few beers from a keg doesn't mean they are an alcoholic or anything.
I agree.
He's 21; therefore, he can drink in the US. I am glad he had fun and shared with the others.
What has he done wrong? Nothing.
What did he teach kids? That when you are 21 or older it is ok to have a few drinks.
of course he can have a few beers, its not an important part of the year so its good to let your hair down a little bit.
What you should be more worried about is that your 'saviour' has just run 1:49.3 for 800m, very average even by british standards and he doesn't seem to be able to win races.
Okay he 'only' ran 1:49, I am more impressed with the 3:42 an hour later where he was perhaps pacing someone else. IMHO he's rounding into some fantastic form. A 1:49 800m is going to put some crap into your legs and then to go back and run 3:42 pacing someone else is pretty impressive. Cut him some slack! I think the beer is a pretty cool move too. Shows he is human and not just a runner. Also that he is 21 and while he dedicates a ton of his life to his training, he probably enjoys having a bit of fun from time to time and being with other people. My 2 pence anyways.
Again another training session.
Is he really going to try to run the first fast race of his professional career next week at Home Depot?!
I have a newfound respect for Webb. Good for him for showing up, racing well, and then blowing it up post-race.
I think that alcohol is great. If it was bad in any way our government wouldn't allow us to drink it. Sure it is heavily taxed but I don't think that is any motivation on our honest government. Any thing that alters your mind is good. I think that the benefits of me boning some drunk 21 year old (probably your sister) far out weigh a few thousand deaths a year. Party on. Go PRE
someone shouldn't put the keg story on a message board? great idea- maybe we can stop this whole internet information thing before it gets out of control.
I can't imagine being raised by parents worried about me hearing about a runner sipping a beer... blasphemy!!
I think Webb might have been trying to send a message to people like us on Letsrun who constantly bring up his name along with current high schoolers that, "Hey, I'm 21, I'm a man, I can run darn well and drink....I'm not a little boy anymore so stop talking about my high school accomplishments and start looking at what I'm going to do this summer as not only A man, but THE man."
Sort of the same thing Brittney Spears went through after a year or two of the little girl image.
You are soooo right. I believe that a true man is a guy that can enjoy a few bears and run fast. What else is there? Go PRE
Grizzly Adams is a guy who enjoyed a few bears, but Webb is another matter.
Great analogy to Brittany Spears. perfect. Lets just hope Alan doesn't start piercing himself.
