Lagat's comments after beaten by Farah in the 5000m

Clearly, Lagat doesn't believe that high mileage is the most efficient way to get strength for a 5000m runner.

Notice that he did NOT say mileage, which is a message that others here should get. He's talking about the hard work that I think too many US runners try to avoid.

So while others, particularly on letsrun, sit around and whine and make excuses, this is a guy that just broke his own AR...and HE is talking about WORKING HARDER. I'll bet Allyson Felix is thinking the same thing.

Exactly what I'm saying and have been saying for some time. Lagat says basically that the other guy is better than me and I have to work harder. That's really the American way--see the Celtics and the Lakers, the Patriots and other real professionals. I'll bet the US Womens Soccer team is saying the same thing to themselves for London. That's what winners do.

The Oregon folks seem to be saying, oh gee that meanie pushed me off the track, and.... That's what whiners do, and why runners from Oregon never win anything internationally.

What difference would that be? That one of the three aforementioned runners has previously tested positive for E.P.O.?

I might agree with you if running high mileage were easy. There is nothing easy about maintaining > 100 mpw. It's just a different way of training. I doubt anyone is running 120 mile weeks just so they dont have to run "long tempos".

of course the answer to improving your strength a few weeks out from the goal race isn't mileage. No rational person on lets run says you should increase your mileage right before a race. Increasing your strength right before a race should be done exactly how he said it should. He will likely increase his mileage after he has recovered from this year's WC if he thinks its necessary.

High mileage doesn't have to exclude all the other things, especially for professional runners. Farah, Rupp, and Solinsky are all high mileage and I guarantee they're doing long tempos and hill work and drills and everything else.

You realize that no US runner doing twice Lagat's weekly mileage has ever run <3:33, <7:40, <13:10, or <27:20?

Running high mileage is easy. I've definitely done 60 mile weeks that were more taxing than a 100 mile week of nothing but easy runs. Running hard is painful, running easy is not. Maybe running an ultra-marathon is painful, but it's a different kind of pain. I think most people find that kind of pain much more tolerable. For that reason, I think there are runners who do run 120 mpw and do minimal amounts of interval work and hard tempos. Of course, combining hard workouts AND high mileage is incredibly taxing, and that's probably what you're referring to when you say high mileage isn't easy.

Bob Kennedy did run 12:58 off 95mpw, but that wasn't double Lagat's mileage AND Bob was running 3 workouts a week plus a long run AND running mileage at ~5:40...or so he said.

And Mo Farah isn't running high mileage. Salazar has said this year that Farah was running about 2/3 or Rupp's volume, and the main difference now is that he is running the same mileage much faster than before.

Less mileage faster. Hmmm, I think I heard that from another guy that's doing pretty well.

Same thing goes for Morgan Uceny at Cornell. I don't want to criticize Rojo, but how many years have we been hearing what I would call high mileage bullshit from JK? How many excuses have we heard like how hard a school Cornell is? What international results does this "genius" training have? Nothing. Morgan goes to the same school, runs 25mpw in college apparently, now up to 50 with Terrance, and she's the DL leader. That's the bottom line right there.

Unlike the negative losers around here, I see a WHOLE BUNCH of Americans who could come back from Deagu with medals (I don't mean to imply that they're all going to win medals, but I think they have a shot):

Not a single one.

That is consistent from what I have seen from Lagat. Both in Monacao and going back to the New York 5000M.

Problem is, I don't think that strength is anything he can get before Daegu.
