Not just the U of Oregon record, but also the U.S. Collegiate 1500 record.
For all of the whinging nancies who are still criticizing Centro for not running fast enough, consider this: He just broke records previously held by Joaquim Cruz and Sidney Maree. That is some pretty rarified air.
He may not crap gold and piss sunshine, but he has run the 1500 meters faster than any other American collegian.
Oh wow, didn't realize he also broke the US collegiate record. Very impressive
How can you break a school record without repping your university? Corey Primm supposedly set the UCLA record at Oxy out of uniform. Someone clarify.
This summer he'll be wearing a USA jersey...but he'll still be a student at the University of Oregon. As long as he is enrolled (or intending to)and still has eligibility he's golden.
Heck, that BYU kid ran on a Sunday out of uniform. while being unattached and still qualified for NCAA's with that run....now that I'd enjoy an explanation for - still.

Yes, I believe this is the criterion.
In which case, why are people saying that he set a collegiate record? Some guy named Ryan or Ryun ran 3:33.1 in 1967, when he was a rising college sophomore...
Wow. Wouldn't have guessed that. Frankly, it surprises me a little that 3:35 was the collegiate record of before. I would have thought somebody, somewhere have run faster than that while at a U.S. college. But that is impressive.
I'm definitely wrong here......
I believe the collegiate record has to be set during the collegiate season......
I take back everything I said now that I have thought about it more....lots of college guys have ran faster than this over in Europe but it didn't count as a "collegiate" record.
I don't think he set the collegiate record, not sure about the school record deal, probably up to each individual school????
I am packing my bags and moving to the Centro nation
From the University of Oregon website:
"That time was nearly two seconds better than the previous school mark of 3:36.48 initially set by Olympic gold medalist Joaquim Cruz in 1984 and matched by A.J. Acosta last summer...
According to USA Track & Field records, Centrowitz's time is the 11th fastest ever by a collegian, and the fourth-best by an American collegian. Among Americans, only Jim Ryun of Kansas (3:33.1/1967), Seneca Lassiter of Arkansas (3:33.72/1999) and Paul McMullen of Eastern Michigan (3:34.45/1995) have run faster times as collegians."

Well, Webb ran equivalently 3:35 in high school. But yeah, this is the collegiate record... I'm pretty sure Ryun's doesn't count, Sydney Maree still yas it.
Did he give the throat slashing sign after the race today?

More importantly: Did Matt Jr. get the family record?
serious Q, why does centro's count this year but not wheating's last year?
cause wheating had turned pro by then (july i believe) and was no longer in the enrolled period. his mile record counted because he wasnt pro, and still in the endrolled period (early june i think).
Last year when Lisa Koll broke the collegiate 5,000m record in Europe (I think it was mid July), I read that all performances by a college athlete count as a collegiate performance through July 31 following their senior season of eligibility unless they have already signed a professional contract prior to that.

Wait, so this was already done faster and over 40 years ago. Wonderful.

Here's the best video I could find of that race:
