only faint memories.
compact, high-rpm guy; kind of a mix of jeff demps and tyson gay.
Thanks for the info - helps a lot, actually (especially the bit about Demps and Gay). I was curious to see how he was able to generate that kind of speed at 5'7"/155 when he was in high school.

I can remember when McTear, determined to get more serious about his training, said "No more shuckin' and jivin'."
Always liked that, and I say it to myself now and then.

I only watched him on TV a few times, and I think he ran something like Bob Hayes' powerful but sort of jerky style.
9.0 100 yd in high school.
Harvey Glance and Calvin Smith were silky smooth sprinters.
1973, 1st week in sophomore study hall with about 60 or 70 kids, we had a new vice principal a tall, heavy set African American who burst in and told us to stop shuckin' and jivin'. One of the kids repeated that loud enough to be heard.
"Mr. B! I want a word with out in the hall!"
Three minutes later the 6 foot Mr B, a football player, came back into the room and you could swear he he was only 3 inches tall.
Saw him run 5.9=WR for yards hand and WR 6.11 yards Automatic WR @MSG during Millrose 76 and 78 respectively.
Second the power fast turnover mention But not in the choo-choo- train image you see in many short fast guys he had a fair stride but a fast turnover.
Riddick ran the last hand time Millrose 60yards in 77.
He followed another really out of nowhere big splash on the sprint scene guy Delano Meriwther. 9.22 yards fastest windy but under 3.0mps ever
Steve Williams ran shorter time but with more wind,2 9>19s 6.3, 3.3, and 9.20 with 4.6 behind Reggie Jones all conditions 9.18 austin '71.

Exactly - the epitome of Bob Hayes.
I remember he said it was pronounced Mc Tare (as in tear a piece of paper0 not Mc Tear as in what comes out of your eyes when you cry.
Also, I think he raced trains that went by his house.
Here's a story from the SI Vault:

Another reason to get angry about the US Olympic boycott in 1980. Hope someone can dig up a video of this guy. He also had one of the best names ever, too.
The last I heard of Houston, he was in trouble with the law in Sweden.
That was a while ago so I don't know if he is still residing there.
If you're interested below are links to a recent (June 2011) 5 part story about Houston McTear.

ouch.
Thanks for the anecdotal info on McTear, everyone. I think I have a pretty clear picture.
The biggest mystery to me as a non-sprinter is how these guys (Demps/Gay/etc) can go through a full range of motion (kindof like Bekele with the full back kick, but bringing the knees up close to 90 degrees), yet do it at close to 300 steps per minute. I can understand how a Jeter or Powell can do it with their form, but for someone like Gay - the combo of flexibility, speed, and power is tremendous. I can see why his adductors are constantly fried:

.
I saw McTear run in the '76 Olympic trials in Eugene. The thing I remember was that he was shorter than everyone, and he wore this dangling cross earring. I was amazed at how fast he could run, since it seems his legs had to rotate twice as many times. The crowd was really focused on him.
I always thought if any sprinter had the potential to break 9secs for the 100m, it was McTear. If he had been exposed to better coaching I believe it could have happened.
Back in 1978 I ran Track for a club Known as A.A.U.,or BGees track club in Glendale Arizona.I know for sure that Crickett, [Lanorris Marshall] from Dysart high in Dysart A.Z. also ran during this time he was a 9.4 sec. 100 yard dash state meet winner with that time. I also know during the same time same club that Vance Johnson who played wide out for Denver Broncos aloso ran and trained with this club [as well as did Houston Mctear]...These guys were a little older than I excluding Vance.I actually ran agains't Vance in grade school high school and a.a.u. Vance was one of the greatest long jumpers I ever knew.Professional all the way...I myself in high school ran a 9.80 100 yard dash and long jumped 23'6",and always my pleasure to participate in various relays. About the video I don't know for sure where to get it. But, if you try to contact either the BGs track club (if they still are together.) Last I knew my brother talked to one of their coaches in 1991, if so they might have some historic video. Or try and google Cricket Marshall(Lenoris Marshall) or Lamont King, as they knew him and were fellow contenders during that time. Hope that helps, good luck eith your search! Also please let me know if you happen to find any of that footage..
