Take a look at Patton's career--essentially a very low 10.0x guy, who once burned a 9.89 in a +1.6 wind.
He has a 9.94 (+1.3) this year, although that was in the suspect Eugene 100m, so I throw out that result. He also has a 10.10 (+2.5) this year.
In 2010 he maxxed out at 10.19 (+0.8)
In 2009, in addition to a 9.89 (+2.0), he ran 9.94 (+0.6) and 9.95 (0.0) and 9.98 (+0.2) and 10.00 (-0.2), in addition to some low 10.0x, for probably his best year ever.
2008 was his 9.89 (+1.6), as well as a 9.98 (0.0) and again a handful of low 10.0x
2007 peaked at 10.11 (+1.1)
2005 and 2006 "were wrecked by significant groin and hip injuries", according to wikipedia
2004 was 10.12 (+1.6)
2003 was 10.00 (+1.5)
2002 was 10.14 (0.0)
Very nice. He has been consistent, has had entirely credible times, has peaked so far in his early 30's, has spent 2 years injured, and has a PR of 9.89 with a good wind of +1.6
THIS guy is, for me, a perfect example of what is cleanly achievable in sprinting. Historically respectable times, dipping down briefly into the 9.8's with excellent conditions. Consistency over time--no huge performance gains in very little time. No ridiculous and sudden muscular hypertrophy. Longevity, because he is running within his natural envelope.
I would put him solidly into the top-10 of whom I consider to have been clean 100m runners.
This guy deserves respect, even though some people have trashed him for not being able to pass a baton. He's still out there running, and running essentially as well as he ever has--which is to say, very well.
I wish him the best--because he's been, I think, clean in an era where many are not, he's had his share of ups and downs, but has come through it shiny, proud, and competitive.
Good for him.
