5'7" and 158 is not unusual for 2.32 but obviously 2.32 is not too common among 50 year olds. He is 4lb heavier than Turnbull when he ran 2.38 at 60 and 2.41 at 65 but Turnbull was taller. Turnbull only ran 3 to 4 days per week. One long run of 3 to 4 hours in the bush and 2 or 3 runs of about 10 miles at about 6.30 pace.
Foster was about the same height as Green but about 15 lbs lighter when he ran 2.20 at 50.
I vehemently disagree - someone 5-7 and around 158ish running ~2:32 is very unusual. The BMI on that is fairly high relatively speaking compared to the diminutive elites. And 2:32 is nothing to sneeze at. Really now, how many guys at that size at any age can run a near 2:30 thon? I don't see it at the masters club I belong to. I didn't see at the marathons that I use to run at in my younger days. The cats I see running 2:30s are always thin, lightweight and with very little muscle mass to boot. Guys that are 5-7/5-8 go 130 - 140 lbs tops that I've observed over the years. And they're certainly not in the weight room pumping iron!
On the late Derek Turnbull: I never heard of him so I had to look him up. Those times he ran are insane for that age; 2:38.46 @ 61 = AG 95%! and 2:41.57 @ 65 = 97%!!....World class elite times! This is another example of a genetic freak that seems to defy all scientific logic in terms of the aging human body slowing down and not getting faster. Where do these guys come from?
