Good question. I have never done training runs with any sort of monitoring--no heart-rate monitor, no GPS, and not even any timing device with splits. Just total time, and lap times back in the days long ago when I used to do occasional track intervals. When I run races I run pretty much by feel, as you have described doing.
That being said, Saturday's long run was likely a slight progression run given that I started in total darkness and on unlit roads that I usually don't run in the dark, and I was going rather carefully for the first 4-5 miles to make sure I didn't crater. I would guess the last 4-5 miles were quite a bit faster than the first 4-5, but I don't know. I felt that I was running well all the way to the end, but I also had this feeling that within another couple of miles the wheels would likely start to come off. That is, I shouldn't get too enthusiastic thinking about a full marathon just yet.
