It depends on what kind of soreness it is. Being sore the morning after lifting weight is normal. But Mike R says it's not that kind of soreness.
My week.
M: off.
T: 7 miles.
W: 11 miles. (7th-10th miles @ 8:00-7:53-7:47-7:41)
R: 7 miles.
F: 8 miles.
SA: 7 miles.
SU: 3km warm-up. 800m x 10. 2km cool down.

This was the first track workout since August 2014. I knew I had lost speed, but I had no idea how slow I had become! I plan to do this every other week, and see how much speed I can regain.
socal, et. al.,
Someone had my post from 24 hours ago deleted. It was a harmless post meant as encouragement and support for socal.
I will be taking a break from this thread until the idiot stalker responsible for this egregious action moves on.
Any further posts using this handle are from the stalker who has somehow usurped my LRC identity.
Best to most.
A lot of good discussion.
Just a quick FYI, this is not SCgal, this is SCgaI. You may not notice the difference, but "Lower case ell", and "Capital I" look the same in this particular font that LetsRun uses. I used to moderate the thread to get rid of these blatant attempts to mimic another user, but somehow that privilege isn't working anymore. Sorry.
FWIW, cush, after my ankle sprain this fall, I was able to see a PT who had me doing a lot of hip strength work (and I've known forever that my hips are weak) as well as some core and ankle/calf work. My PT routine includes: Lateral step downs and side step (monster walks) with band, and eccentric calf raises as well as some jump-squat-hold, skater hops, toe walking and planks. I have also done walking lunges and step ups during my PT. I am a lot stronger now and I think it helps. I'm still not at the right weight for racing, but I feel better running. YMMV, but it's worth a shot.
I assumed that was the case as I have seen this done before. Unfortunately there is little that can be done about it. Reasoning is not part of the makeup of those with severe Sociopathic Personaliy Disorders such as this.
A few weeks back I asked one of the posters if he knew a friend of mine. The next days someone starts posting using that name. Strange what motivates some people.
You do tend to ask a lot of personal questions. I can understand how SCgal and others would think you're a stalker.
Stalker, what's your story?
SCgal, sure hope you keep posting, you are one of the few women that run times similar to my wife's, so it's nice to compare notes.
Anyhow, she and I were able to do some speedwork again this week, on Tuesday, thanks to the mild weather here in KC, did 2x300, 1x600, 1x1200, 1x600, 2x300. The 300's were just over 7 min/mile, the 1200 just under 8:00/mile, so we have some work to do before the 1 mile track race in June that is the focus. Yes, we have time, but want to be well-prepared. She just received the new Garmin 735 that I got for her as a belated Christmas present. After the workout, it said she'd need 56 hours of recovery, and she said "I've never needed that much time!". Wednesday's run was 3 miles in 30 minutes and "I'm not going any farther" and some other comments I won't mention, other than that the Garmin seemed to get that first day's need for recovery spot on.
Mike Rohl, do you do a lot of sitting, that seemed to cause a LOT of soreness for my wife, now that she has a non-sitting job, much soreness is gone, especially in hamstrings and glutes.
KP, how's your recovery coming, are you sleeping well by now?
First race for us is Feb. 25, so far the ice and snow has missed us for the most part, so had a 32 mile week last week.
MikeL,
My job generally involves a lot of sitting and computer work. I went to a standing desk last spring and I experienced a dramatic improvement. I still sit from time to time or lean against a bar stool.

Mike L, I have had a Garmin 235 for a little more than a year now that I have been very pleased with (other than finding out my routes were all about a quarter to half a mile shorter than I thought they were :>( However, I have found that the HR monitor is good, but far from perfect and about 10% of the time seems to pick up my cadence rather than heart rate. It's calculation of recovery also seems to be mostly good, but sometimes way off base.

Mike,
Funny you asked that because in the routine of evaluating what I am doing I realized as I got up from my chair in at home that i set a lot and I am always tight getting up. I am pretty active and mobile at work/ I'm up to the weight room moving around and out at the track for about half my days and moving around campus. So I started trying not to sit and watch hours of news as I have the last few months. I think it is bad for my hamstrings and my soul. :)
I use the Garmin 920 for triathlons and the thing is pretty impressive. Most of my team uses the 620 or 235. none of like the wrist heart monitor and none of pay attention to the training zones or recovery periods.
First meet tomorrow at Houghton University.

It can't do that. Other things it can't do are pick up HR interference from overhead power lines, and pick up HR interference from someone else's Garmin.
If you find the readings are high at the beginning of a run, it is because you are not warmed up. I used to regard this as a bug, but now I see it as a feature. Go out slow, and stay slow until the HR reading falls to the easy range. Then you can start doing whatever the plan for the day calls for.

Week 294
*************************
Hello 50+ers! I've got nothing to report this week. Sometimes work and family take precedent, and I just couldn't get myself out the door. Weather didn't help either, gloomy for much of the week. I did run a paltry 4-miles on Friday (7:17 pace), just to feel alive. Was in the car 14 hours Saturday to take care of some family issues. Today I'll finish up the drive, and hopefully the family issues will have settled. This week promises to be much better, but sure hope the weather improves.....the sun has been a rare sighting.
All the Best!
PS-Go Pack!!
This past week was a bit of a setback. Sunday's and Tuesday's jogs both started well with a couple of comfortable miles before the hammy started cramping. After 20-30" of walking, it would calm down and I could resume jogging for 3-4' before the cramping returned and I repeated the walking/jogging routine. After doing this a few times, I was back home. So I still got in 35-40' of jogging, but it was not uninterrupted.
On Thursday things went differently, but not better. I was a little over a mile from home when something in the hip/upper quad area started cramping. I have had some slight hip soreness in recent weeks, so this wasn't a big surprise but still a disappointment. Anyway I took another walking break again before I resumed jogging, but it didn't go away. In fact, it got worse. I tried a couple more walking breaks, but every time I resumed jogging things seemed to get worse. So I shut it down, walked home, slapped on some ice, and swallowed some ibuprofen.
My amateur assessment is that it's a hip flexor. It's felt a lot better each subsequent day, but there's still some residual soreness there. I'm hoping for a mid-week return. Fingers crossed.

Tuesday was hot. 40 plus degees C . by the time I pulled the pin on my running and rode home. I had intended to do a few more kms but the heat was knocking me around.
lucKY, sometimes you gotta come first…just sayin….
Great week mo’pak. If you don’t already, you could have your own youtube channel.
My week:
Mon = 3 miles hike with son
Tue = 3 miles on treadmill, easy @ 10 min pace
Wed = 5 miles elliptical
Thu = 3 miles road, medium @8:35 pace: 8:56, 8:42, 8:07
Fri = 5 miles elliptical, legs sore from Thu
Sat = 3 miles road, hard @ 8:03 pace: 8:16, 8:07, 7:44
Sun = 5 miles elliptical, easy, legs sore
Pretty good week. I turned 58 today. I really don’t see myself as someone who is getting close to 60. I genuinely feel really good.
I swear the plan for Sat’s run was to just go 8:30 pace. I even chanted it during the first mile. I just felt too good and could not hold myself back. LucKY’s term, “Irrational Exuberance†applies here.
Have a good week folks.
Hi All - thanks for the encouragement to keep posting and thanks for the explanation about my imposter, LucKY. I've stayed off the board for a couple of weeks because I didn't want to see what he was posting under my name. If this happens to any of you, LetsRun Employee 1.1 encourages us to use the "report post" function to get the imposter booted. Apparently this is not uncommon and will likely happen again.
I've been struggling in my running. Ever since I got back from Christmas vacation, I've been running out of steam on my workouts and runs. I've been feeling exhausted at work too, am crabby, and just don't have any pep. I've got appointments with my doctors over the next two weeks to figure out what's going on but I'm bummed because I'm fit, uninjured, and we've had amazingly warm weather. I've had my thyroid removed due to cancer so I take thyroid pills and may need the dosage adjusted but I'm also going to check our my ferritin, vitamin B and vitamin D levels. I did make it through 36 miles last week but it was ugly.
Sun 10.2 E

Wed 5.7 Fartlek (8x1minH/1E @ 5k pace)
Thu Off
Fri 3.0 E
Sat 7.0 Including 5k "race"
My race yesterday was really more just a run. I wasn't sure if I should even try to run given how I'd been feeling but I decided to get out there and go for it. I finished in 23:42 which was a minute slower than last year on the same course. My legs were shaking when I finished but I did get 3rd grandmaster (the 50 y.o. 2nd place finisher was one second ahead of me!). I'm heading out for a recovery run now and will see how it goes.
I told Employee 1.1 that we have a great group on this Forum and I didn't want it ruined by people who don't share in our vision or our struggles. Thanks to all of you who support and encourage mature runners to be the best we can be.
So nice to hear your familiar "voice" again! I hope your current issue turns out to be nothing serious and you quickly solve it. In the meantime you are smart to be doing mostly easy miles. Good luck.
