Good advice by coach Spikez. Too much too soon is what kills so many resolutions. I think a good goal for 2016 would be to get to 3-4 miles per run, 3x per week, with consistency. That is enough for jumping into some 5Ks, and with that base you could take up a half marathon training plan next spring.
Walking first is how I got back to running after a couple of layoffs. Find a three-mile loop in your neighborhood and take a month to build up to walking that every day. Take another month just walking it every day. Try to walk briskly that second month. After the second month, switch to run-walk on three of those days like so: walk the first mile, then run until you start to feel bad, then walk again to finish the loop. When you are able to run the final two miles without stopping (might take a month or so), you are ready to skip the beginning walk and just run the whole three miles. Anyway that was the method I used.
Buy some good shoes, especially important with the extra weight. Better to spend the money on shoes than to spend it on the doctor.
