I put on over 15 lbs in two weeks, amazing what happens when cancer is no longer catabolizing your muscles.
Ran a few times this week, not really a goal but was tired of walking uphill on the treadmill. Sore muscles from running felt good.
A good review of exercise and stem cells is in the recent edition of Exercise and Sports Sciences Reviews:
Exercise and Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells: Protection, Quantity, and Function. Michael De Lisio and Gianni Parise, Exerc. Sport Sci. Rev., Vol. 41, No. 2, pp. 116Y122, 2013.
Of interest to me, from the text, page 121:
" Another potential mechanism specific to the vascular niche may be modulation of the quantity of niche spots available (niche capacity) with exercise. Indeed, exercise training has been demonstrated to increase blood flow in the bone marrow (15). The mechanisms responsible for increased
blood flow in the marrow with exercise training were not determined (15); however, it would be interesting to examine whether increased blood flow was caused by increased marrow vasculature."
and:
" ... determine whether preconditioning of the niche could lead to improved outcomes after BMT. We demonstrated that exercise training recipients before BMT significantly increased their likelihood of survival by approximately
threefold (18)."
For what it's worth, still trying to modify vasculature, now in the bone marrow, this week's 'training':
Week of 3/25
Mon 30+ min treadmill, steady state after warm-up, 20 min at 7% grade & 4.2mph, Garmin HR ~ 126 which is 70% HRR, slight drift upwards last few minutes, RPE ~ 6. Felt good.
Tue 30+ min treadmill, warm-up then 20 min including 4 x 3:00 with 2:00 recovery @ 10% grade & 4.2mph for interval and 7% & 4.2 mph for recovery, last two intervals increased incline to 11%, RPE 7 first three intervals and RPE 6 for recovery, last interval RPE 7.5. Garmin had me at ~ 80% HRR last two intervals, 75+% first two.
Wed no exercise, sore throat - want to but being cautious.
Thur 30+ min on treadmill including 3x5min run @ 10:00 mile pace (6mph) with 2 min recovery walking @ 4mph HR ~ 142, then a 4th run @7mph for 4 minutes then a walking cool down. Runs felt like 6 RPE with last one a 7, HR ~155. Tired of doing the walking incline workouts, running felt more comfortable.
Wt: 70.5 kgs = 155 lbs That is over 15 lbs in two weeks!
Blood Counts: WBC 9.5, RBC 3.54, Hemog 10.4, Hemat 30.4, platelets 225
Fri 30 min run on treadmill @ 2% grade, started at 5mph and progressed to 6 mph for last 13+ minutes. RPE 5 - 6, HR steady ~ 144 last part of run.
Sat 3+ mile run outside, including 2 x 1/2 mile, intervals felt like RPE of 8, warm-up RPE of 6, and recovery RPE of 7. Felt like I wasn't clearing lactate, legs weren't tired just felt tired everywhere else. Max HR 157 on interval 1, max pace 6:17 (briefly), first 1/2 interval under 7:00 mile pace. Walked a bit just before start of interval 2 and a short bit after. Used Garmin.
Sun 30+ min on treadmill, 10 min warm-up, 5 min @ 4mph & 4% grade then 5 min @ 4.2mph & 4% grade; easy walk/jog: Jog 3:00 @ 5mph @ 2% grade, walk 4% grade @4mph. RPE 5 on jog, HR ~ 130 = ~ 70+% HRR. Muscles sore from yesterday.
Nice to read the good 50+ race results ... sigh.
A good week of training or recovery to all!
