Holy cow. I was just checking the boards not expecting to find anything worthwhile. If Sammy was in the race you knew it was gonna be a good one. He had a heart that you rarely see in sports.
RIP Sammy.
Whoa. Last thing I expected to see when I popped in before bed. Thanks for the memories Sammy.
Anyone have a link to any Olympic Marathon footage from 2008?
"He jumped out of a balcony and they tried to revive him, but he didn't make it," said Biwott.
Suicide?
The RW story is direct from Monti, who got confirmation from the manager, Federico Rosa
I have just about all of Wanjiru's marathons, except for Fukuokua. They are a pain to host though.
I'll watch 2008 Beijing, 2009 London, and 2010 Chicago in memory.
One of the best marathon finishes I have ever seen...

RIP Sammy
Its 4am here in Iten and the town is already awake mourning the loss of Sammy Wanjiru.
RIP Samuel Wanjiru. I am very saddened to hear of this. I logged into lrc 5 minutes ago, saw the black page, and exclaimed "THE F**K!?" What horrible news.
You were (ARE) my favorite marathoner of all time Mr. Wanjiru. The world has lost a true talent.
Holy F***.
I don't know what to say right now.
VERY sad news. We lost a GREAT part of our running community. He will be sadly missed.
Tribute to a tragic hero:
This is unbelievable...this is the biggest loss in the world of Athletics..it just doesn't sink in..no way!!where can we find the details!..if it is true..then RIP WANJIRU..so sad!
Unbelievable news. Having really gotten into running in the last few years, Beijing was one of the first marathons I really paid attention to start to finish. Such a gutsy and impressive runner, and such a tragic loss for the sport.
Sammy was probably my favorite runner to watch ever. This is heartbreaking.

Awesome tribute, thank you. Very emotional.
The loss of an extremely talented athlete, but one that did not realize the gift bestowed upon him is sad. It had become obvious that he was very troubled and this, sadly as well, is not the least bit surprising.
No one is all good or all bad, let's face it, every man has his flaws. From what i heard maybe alcohol could have been Sammy's major one's. His run in beijing was unquestionably the best performance i've seen, and his win in chicago showed so much balls that just watching it makes me want to run out the door and let rip. I'll remember him for those two incredible runs and the inspiration he gave us mere mortals.
He was awesome, he had seemingly inexhaustible reserves of courage, didn't look or run perfectly by any means, but boy was it effective. He was marathoning's brightest flame that's so painfully burned out far too early. Cycling was in mourning this week, now it's the turn of our sport. Distance running has lost its brightest star. RIP Sammy.
