If we're this great nation which we are and we stand by certain values like giving people a fair trial, having their say before punishment, etc. Then shouldn't we be giving even the most vile creatures some kind of trial?

He already had a trial - SEALS were simply delivering justice.

Yes, absolutely.

Actually, there was no trial. Heck, the head of the FBI even stated that there is no mention of 9/11 on its most-wanted page for Bin Laden because the FBI found "no evidence that he was involved in the 9/11 events."
I didn't believe it when I first read that, but check it out:

In a perfect world, yes!
But as we know, this is not a perfect world.
Grabbing the man and locking him up in Guantanamo Bay Camp would just rally these jihadists something the U.S. doesn't want to afford them.
After all, for as long as he is alive, and heis the dreamer (of jihadism), he;ll be the rallying focal point that provides the latent energy that has now disappeared.
Bin Laden was also a great fundraiser for Al Qaeda from wealthy Saudi Businessmen. With him gone, it is debatable whether the money tap will keep flowing.
One more thing, Bin Laden is acceptable to all Al Qaeda franchises. Even though they operate autonomously from his Al Qaeda, they draw inspiration and direction from him. He is their spiritual guru. With his demise (great I might add), his deputy, who is Eqyptian (Dr. Ayman Al Zawahiri) isn't as readily acceptable. It's said that there are factions within Al Qaeda with some sections not comfortable with the Egyptian leadership-Egyptians hold various top leadership positions.
In my view, and I have no evidence on this, The US sent out to 'neutralise the target' (I love this phrase). They had no intention of capturing him although they didn't know if he was donning an explosive vest hence the shots.

Didn't UBL himself acknowledge that he directed this whole thing (9-11) and that he was even shocked that the buildings crumbled (contrary to what he expected?
Also, he personally sent the guy who surveilled the US Nairobi Embassy at teh junction of Moi Avenue and Haile Selassie Avenue. He looked at the map, then pointed at the spot where the van with explosives would be driven into.
It is 9-11, Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam embassies, Marine Barracks in Saudi, USS Cole e.t.c.
What I am interested in is UBL's reaction when he finally knew that THE AMERICANS HAD COME FOR HIM.
He had derided and mocked the Americans for almost two decades all along thinking or assuming that he was invincible.
When they finally arrived at the third floor where he was hiding, just what was his reaction? What were his thoughts.
I assume that he must have said something ot this effect; "They have finally come, I am done."
May be that is why he didn't put up any resistance as in he didn't try to fire at them despite all the pistols they found in that mansion.
one of the best things I've heard from all this is a phrase from the Navy seal who got into the room into which he was hiding.
"not knowing whether he was there, I entered the room and CAME FACE TO FACE WITH OSAMA BIN LADEN".
Sorry, I didn't mean to derail your thread.
Only chance of their accepting his surrender would have been if he'd been naked and spread eagle upon their arrival. Have to believe that killing him was the SEAL's #1 option, as it was certainly the safest. UBL got what he wanted - a chance to be martyred for Islam.

A recent news article reports “Osama bin Laden, the glowering mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that murdered thousands of Americans, was killed in an operation led by the United States, President Barack Obama said Sunday.”
And if you believe that it would take ten years for a superpower to hunt down someone who pulled off a major terrorist attack against them, I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn, I’d like to sell you.
Bin Laden was the Boogeyman justifying a trillion dollar per year Defense budget, laws that undermined the Bill of Rights and “justified” our continued occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
It’s not clear how much -if any- of the al Qaeda story, we’ve been told is true. Was bin Laden the leader of a faction of fighters, who helped drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan, who later turned against the West? Was bin Laden, an actor, who played a terrorist for the CIA? Did the CIA kill that actor when his usefulness was done?
We do know that an ex-president of Italy Francesco Cossiga and a former director of the US Army War College, Dr. Alan Sabrosky have both said that the 911 attack was an “inside job” by the CIA and Mossad. Israel was caught red-handed trying to recruit Arabs for a Mossad-run al Qaeda cell in Palestine. How hard would it have been for the Mossad to create al Qaeda cells in Egypt and Saudi Arabia to recruit the 911 hijackers?
Most likely, bin Laden’s body was taken from the freezer, he was being stored in, and thawed out this week so Barack Obama could have some spectacular headline to take public attention off his birth certificate –especially after that colossal blunder in which the nine editing layers in the Adobe pdf were accidentally left active and not “flattened out”.
There could be other reasons at work for bin Laden’s death to be announced at this time. The quagmire in Afghanistan is definitely getting worse, and it might be time to declare victory and beat a hasty retreat. We definitely can’t afford three wars at one time, which is exactly what we’re juggling right now.
If Obama is going to steal the Lybian oil fields, it might be good to shut down the Afghan war before we put boots on the ground in Lybia.
The only thing I can say for certain about “our” foreign policy is that very little the government tells us is the truth, and the beneficiaries are invariably Big Oil or Israel, and never the American public.

I had wondered about that too. He must have needed a new pair of shorts. In an instant he must have known he was done for. I even wonder if there was some little trial or at least some words prepared for his ears prior to his death.
.....And I will strike down upon thee with great vengence and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the lord! When I lay my vengence upon thee.
Jules
It's because bin laden has been dead since December 2001.
Wtf? What is with the right wing guys finding a conscience the day Bin Laden gets the knife? Cheerleading the war(s), cheerleading wiretaping, justifications for rendition and torture, justifications for Guantanamo - but killing Bin Laden without a trial? I object sir!
Here's how it works, if you instigate an international war and are the target of a ten year manhunt and when found the Navy Seals show up at your door, then you're probably not going to be having a trial.

oh, absolutely. They should have had the Seals go in WITHOUT guns just to be certain Osama wouldn't be hurt no matter what the cost. And they they should have thrown him a tea party on the chopper back to the carrier, I mean, if he chose to go along politely.
I could have killed a weaponless OBL with $100 Billion of satellites, aircraft carriers, fighter squadrons, Black Hawk helos, drones, AWACS, Stealth bombers, etc. backing me up too.
He probably would have gotten the death penalty anyway. This just shortened the process. We don't need some sort of symbolic trial, f*ck that.
Death is not a punishment, its a reprieve.
Do you suggest torture as a better option then?
Funny how Obama hates America but there are accounts from the local grocers that he was having only the best named brand items delivered, loved Coke and Pepsi.
