Weather is getting better, and the government shutting down should set some of you free next week. Doubles until the government reopens? If Boehner is going to give you lemons, then make some lemonade.

I was in Washington, D.C. last month. What a horrible, disgusting city. I don't know why anyone would voluntarily choose to live there. Yuck.
great museums, so many miles of parks, trails, rivers, history, neoclassical buildings, excellent variety of ethnic and webb foods, a small eclectic music scene. how could you not like d.c.?

Burger joints??
Having to dodge the bums camped out on every corner isn't very inviting. Oh, and the trash all over the streets? Disgusting.
Feds work all over the country, though there are too many of them in the swamp known as D.C.
During the last shutdown, the majority of workers did their jobs as usual, just without pay- congress later authorized back pay. I'll be seeing patients at our VA hospital; people still get sick and need care, regardless of what the tea partiers seem to think.

Stupid Tea partiers hating on the sick and stuff. They must be evil. We need to spend and spend to show we care.
I would love to be able to work during the shutdown but not only will I not be allowed in my building but it will be illegal to use my email account. Why would I work for free? I am a scientist and I am in competition with other scientists around the world. In my current project we have the lead on our competitors but the shutdown would put me way behind.

Is hating on DC sort of a LetsRun meme or something? Can someone seriously explain the joke to me because I don't get it.
Same here, can't do any work if they shut us down. Fortunately I'm not in DC. I was just telling some of my co-workers that my plan for the shutdown, if it happens, is sleep, run, eat, sleep, run, eat, ...
Seriously? That short of time (most a couple of weeks) would set you so far behind? What field is this? If you can do significant amounts of research in a span of a few days, but not doing it sets other groups far ahead of you, you are doing something clearly wrong.
Just curious as well, you must work at a national lab? Can I ask which one...?

The museums and zoo will be shut down.
I assume someone will feed the animals, though.
That has to be considered essential spending.
Although I could see someone in an office looking at that on a spreadsheet and crossing that off as essential spending.
You could have a pretty crazy scene at the zoo when the government opens back up.

I think there are a lot of people on LetsRun from DC, so it seems to be funny to come on and criticize the city. You know, point out its weak points, etc. There was a thread a few months ago in which the OP said some awful things about DC and was rebutted in great numbers.
It is a bunch of flyover rednecks who finally leave their state to see the Nation's Capital but find themselves aghast when they discover that everyone doesn't have a big house with a picket fence. They are scared of the black people and cannot figure out why there aren't any Panera's when they get hungry for lunch.
I think DC is a killer city, but of course that is just my opinion.

Sounds like you provided a good answer as to why you would work for free. And you're a scientist?
It isn't a joke. Most people who go to D.C. never go back unless they are forced to. Lots of dirt/trash on the streets, an out of control homeless population, dangerous streets, crime, etc.

Oh, so you last went to DC in 1976?
Well, you should try it out again. It is a beautiful city, one that we should all be proud is our Capital.
Found out for sure today- the Veterans Health Administration is fully funded for a 2 year cycle, so shut-down doesn't affect VHA employees. Apparently, even if the budget wasn't set, VHA falls under the category of essential services, and work would continue, just unpaid. Which is what happens for FBI, DOD, Immigration, Border Patrol, Coast Gaurd, TSA, etc. Lots of people fall into the essential services category.
I was there from February 24-26 of this year.
